  • Dear all
these places of historical value were discussed as and when we
crossed them on the trip to tanjore

could be useful for those who take the road in future

    chennai - chingelpet

    1 thirisulam, Chathurvedimangalam,Thiruneetru Chola Nallur,
shiva temple dates back to the period of Kulothunga Chola I (1070 -
1120). later chola and pandya inscriptions

    2 pallavapuram
the first Palaeolithic tool in India was found in Pallavaram. It was
also the first discovery of prehistoric artefacts outside Europe.
that Pallavas once had their capital in Pallavapuram (Pallavaram).
the earliest of their stone inscriptions is found in Pallavaram
(Pallava puram) in a cave temple excavated by Mahendravarman I (600-
630 A.D.). The Pallavaram cave temple is now being used as a Moslem
place of worship and the inscriptions giving the different titles of
the king have been completely covered.
the author of periya puranam was born in nearby Kunrathur

    3 tambaram
Tambaram is an ancient town referred to as Taamapuram in an
    inscription of the 13th century.
Implements of Stone Age men have been found in this area and also
large stone monuments of the Iron Age. mainly within the mcc campus

    4 guduvancheri
Around 300 B.C., there were people of the Iron Age living in this
area and they built their burial monuments in the form of dolmens and
stone circles which are called Megaliths
these can be seen about 100 metres east of the Great Southern Trunk
Road near Guduvancheri railway station.Near Guduvancheri there is now
a small village called Nandivararam (Nandi puram) which must have
been named after the Pallava king Nandivarman

5 singaperumal koil- a divya desam
Japali, a Maharishi was in a state of penance and Narasimha Swami
obliged him by giving him Dharshan as 'Ugra Narasimhan' after killing
seen, that it was built nearly 1500 years ago.Since the Lord's idol
is inside the cave, devotees wishing to go round the Lord
(Pradhakshinam) have to do so by going round the
hill.So 'Giripradhakshanam' is a speciality with this temple.

Singaperumal Kovil is not a divya desam.
  • Pardon my ignorance.. but are there specific sites that have been
