PSVP - My suggestion
  • > WE HAVE TO COLLECT ALL THE PUBLISHED INSCRIPTIONS

I was thinking about something along these lines. The project should
be something where everyone can participate - and which is of great
    use to historic community.

Currently there is no easy way of finding - say, how many
inscriptions did uttama chola really issued, how many were from his
first regional year second year, from where they were issued, where
is the exact text of this inscription published etc. Almost every
other historian is spending considerable time in going through
    physical volumes.

If we could do something to populate a database - say a web based
application were members can login and populate this info - which
can later be searched, it will be of great use.

It will also help strategic analysis - why uttama is issuing more
inscriptions from thondai mandalam in later years ? etc

Even if each of us can enter 10 inscriptions, with 100 members it
can become a searchable database of 1000 inscriptions.

We need not type out the actual inscription etc - all we need is a
    reference which anybody can refer.

    Any thoughts ?

Swetha : Pl include it as my suggestion for PSVP project
  • vanakkam,

A searchable database is a great idea. In fact, SPS has been telling
about computerising all the available SI inscriptions.

In my opinion, I think these are not the activities for the formative
stage. G, what you have devised is something that we can take up once
the group has set foot at least to some extent. Just my humble
opinion. People like you who have hands-on experience need to decide.

  • vanakkam,

Krupa incidentally, I was also thinking about utilzing
whatisindia.com. I know that fools seldom differ, but people like us
    do think alike!

    Dear krupa

Good idea. If it is OK to all of us, may be we can host a asp page with
a backend database and start cutting and pasting info into it.

Swetha : Cutting and pasting from whatisindia.com is something we can
take up even at this stage. That can be a starter. Then we will see how
    to expand it further

Looking forward to other opinions in this direction
