what is a katrali?
  • dear all

most of us know the outline. a katrali is a granite stone temple in
lieu of a burnt brick temple.
should we all not talk about the aspects of raising a katrali
also the first and the latest( before the onset of concrete)

when i crossed pillayar patti last week( travelling from kodai to
karaikudi) between pillaiyarpatti and kundrakudi somebody is
painstakingly building a stone temple. seemed great from the distance.

so swetha and her tribe should enlighten us on the details of katralis
  • venkat sir???

ungalukku katrali pathi theriyaadhaa????? ungalai naan nayanmaar listla saerkkaradha mudivu panni adhukkaana aayathangalil alreadyirangitten!!!

now you come and tell that u want more light to be shed on Katrali's..... idhellaam ungalukke konjam overaa theriyalai???

But any idea how many katrali's done by sembiyan maadevi???
  • i would certainly love to learn more on the social aspects of katrali.

in those days building a katrali involve mind bogling logistics.
for example a village can decide to build a brick temple. but a
katrali definitely needed higher investments and royal support
basic is how was stone transported over such long distances?

how were the huge weights managed?

were they done mainly for better longtevity(or to resemble mountains
    where the gods reside)

my favourite katrali is mazhapadi , but the sculptures are crude.
