Dear all
No debates and opinions in 2003? Lets start again shall we....
Who's death did you find very disturbing during the story...
1.Aditya Karikalan...the cursed crown prince who falls in love with the girl who he cant marry..earns her wrath by killing someone close to her heart...tries to make up and eventually...gives his life.
2.Manimegalai..the young innocent princess with dreams of a sundarapurushan builtup by her brother..caught betweeen the rivalry between her brother and her beloved..loosing her mind in the bargain eventually dying in the arms of her beloved.
3.Periya Paluvettarayar...The kingmaker who gets dissillusioned by his young new wife..betraying his king and plotting against him amd his children fooling himself that he was doing it for the good of the kingdom.....Realising that he was harbouring traitors in his own household...takes his own life in his hands after saving the country from a disaster.
4.Mandhakini...The deaf mute girl who loves a prince...bears a twins she doesnt raise..safegaurding her lovers child like a guardian angel..finally giving her life to save her beloveds and gains immortality in the eyes of everyone.
What do think folks.
looking forward for more veiws especially from our freinds who have been spectators for long now welcome to the discussion.
I found the death of manimegalai unacceptable. Kalki should not have killed manimeghalai. All other deaths were necessary either for the glorification of the character or for historic reasons.
Manimeghalai should have been married to VD as second wife after Kundhavai :)) If AMV can have many wifes why not VD???
kalki could have avoided mandhakini's death as she guarded rrc in several occasions. even in the last part, she played a key role in saving sundara chola's life. AK's murder is unavoidable, as it a historical fact. kalki, wouldn't have come up with a nice finish of the novel without the death of manimekalai. this made VD realize her true affection and he attained a sort of enlightenment, atleast he was no longer mischievous. hadn't Periya Paluvettarayar taken his life by himself thereby saving the country from traitors, nobody would have liked him at the end of the novel. being one of the villians, he needed some punishment.
Manimegalai's death - Such an innocent piece of characterization. Ever since the first time i read PS, i was most fascinated by her. She stands as an example of true love living in her own utopian world. It was truly disturbing. My vote goes to Manimegalai.
when a man realises his follies and repents its a moving scene. not only that when he takes up the blame for a murder he certainly did not commit( at the cost of his life long reputation)it is certainly commendable. an old and broken man, realising that his young and comely wife has been taking him for a ride, dies. a poignant moment in ps. my vote for the saddest death goes to periya pazhvettaraiayr.
