nagarathars of chettinad were initially traders in puhar. the frequent flooding of their godowns created a fear psychosis. a 1500 years later , now having settled in water starved ramnad and sivagangai they still build houses with ground floor at 7- 8 feet high with many steps leading to it fearing a flood
why the nagaraththaars moved to pandya land is another story (very remniscent of the jew's mass exodus in pharoh's egypt.)
