malapaadi
  • dear friends

i am visiting a temple tomorrow( thursday) one that you would all
    find very relevant to ps

it is called malapaadi.( the name strikes a bell?)
malapaadiyul maanickame the thevaram that senthan amuthan sings in
the garden and in the gaol.

malapaadi is the motherland of sembiyan mathevi.the mother of uthama
sozha whom kalki calls periya piraatti.
she comes from the malavarayar clan.

neighbouring towns are called aranmanaikudi, kandaraathitham, and
sembiyan kudi( the last two named after the cholas)

the temple was built by sembiyan mathevi and her son. uthama.

the rajagopuram seems to be of a later date.

the statues are very crude and we can see a process of testing a new
strucure of stone. plenty of kalvettus too.

i shall see neighbouring pazhuvuur ( of paluvettaraiyar and nanthini
    fame)if i have time.

the temple is equidistant from trichy tanjore and ariyalur.
    a hour from all.

on the kollidam bank is this massive temple.
please dont miss it if you have a chance.
  • Venkatesh...
Are you talking about the Thirumazhapadi???...Nice temple isnt it...
Always wondered if the Tiru was a prefix for towns with Historic nature then we should have Thiru thanjai and Thirumadhurai .....
Or Is it town associated with spiritual hyms like paadal petra thalams?
    Any thoughts
  • Dear Srithar
of course it is thiru mazhapadi.
vajaranathar and azhakammai temple on koLLidam bank

on the thiru -must mean holy only
madurai is already called thirualavai and tanjore has no padal petra
sthalams on the shaivaite front. individual vaishnavaite temples
must have the prefix i guess
