Big Temple - Myth - Shadow - Proved Wrong - 3D
  • Marvellous work Shash. Sorry skipped it as the subject says "Karuvurar" but
we are discussing something else :-)

I and Satheesh wanted to try this some time back and gave up due to time and
resources. Did you use Google Sketchup

    Somebody tried it

  • sir

it wont fall on the ground is what they say.
on one side it fall on the sandigeswara gopuram.
that means it doesnot fall on the ground. is this not true??
  • Chandikeswara only covers a small part of the day, during which the shadow
doesn't fall to the ground anyway. For most of the day, it falls right on
    the ground...

Besides, for half the year, the sun is on the same side as Chandikeswara; so
it falls during those times too...

  • Yes, the sketchup model is the one that comes up when you go to Tanjore on
    Google Earth.

But it's a very flat model with photos as texturing! I want to eventually
build a nice accurate version which can show the actual features as they
    are!

  • Sir,

my dad said wen shadow falls the tip of the gopuram will not be seen. it is
said that the tip of the gopuram will not fall on the ground n not the
gopuram itself. te top portion's shadow mostly fall on the big round's
shadow. so the myth is right and more over we only have missed the two words
    when it is explained.nu...

plz help me know the truth.

    Kirutika.

and when he was studying in tanjore he n his frnds wen to the temple every
sunday to find if it was true. the angle of sunlight over that zone is the
    reason for this

i also saw ur photos. in the second one the sun ray light direction is on
the round piece. how about if it is directed on the tip?

  • Like I said, the rule is that if you can see the kalasam from a point, the
shadow can fall at that point. In my model, I simulated the kalasam using a
cylinder, and the cylinder's shadow definitely falls to the ground.

Same with the photographs that various people have taken!

There's no point anymore in the legend; it doesn't work...

  • i wil let my dad know this. he is very hard to convince may be i'l try to.

    thanks sir.
  • Show him the 3D model which was circulated in the forum. I believe there is
also a photo in the yahoo groups photos link where some of our members have
clicked a photo when the shadow was falling on the ground

  • An excellent most brief statement on the subject. The Shadow legend is false.
