ootakoothar pattukku rettai thalpal
  • I think most of you must have heard this story. But it is for those
    who havent.

There is a sying in tamil "oota koothar pattuku rettai thalpal".How
did this story originate? There is an interesting version.Kambar and
ootakoothar were of same period. They were patronised by kulothinga
chola. His queen liked kambar most.King liked ootakoothar most. And
    kambar and ootakoothar were rivals.

One day king listening to ootakoothar asked kambar to leave his
court.Kambar sang the following song and left.

    mannavanum neeyo?
    valanadum unatho?
    unnai arindho tamilai odhinen?
    Ennai etrukollatha vendhundo?
    Undo kurangu etru kollatha kombu?

Hearing this episode queen became angry and went and locked her
andhapuram door.Whatever the king pleaded did not work out."Unless
kambar comes and sings a song i wont open the door" said queen.King
told this to ootakoothar. He went to the queen and sang a
song, thinking that it would pacify the queen.

An angry queen said "Ootakoothare, for your song, here goes the second
lock"(in tamil, ootakoothare, umathu pattuku rettai thalpal) and
locked the second lock of the door.King then went and pleaded kambar
and he came back and queen opened the door.

Have you guys heard it before?
