I got a glimpse of vandhiyathevan's past yesterday while reading kudanthai's book. The rashtrakuta king Krishna III has been referred to as "Vallavaraiyar" in one of the Aditya / Parantaka inscriptions. Hence it is likely that vandhiyathevan might have been a descendent of rashtrakutas. No marriage happened in cholas without political gains, in striking contrast to the picture kalki paints ! Personally I would like to believe the kundavai - vandhiyathevan love, though history stands against it.
Oh No Mr. Gokul!!! Please don't tell that Kunthavai and V.Thevan never loved and they married only for political gains. My love for Kunthavai will be lost. I am so much absorbed with Kunthavai's dynamism. I even told my mom that I will marry a girl whose characters match with that of Kunthavai's (;-)))
I heard that there is Sannadhi for Kundhavai in one of the temples near Tanjore. Could any of you please tell me, in which temple, this sannadhi is located. I am planning to visit Tajore & adjoining places on Aug 21st and 22nd. If any of you have visited those places, please tell me what are the temples / places of interest, decent / affordable hotels to stay etc. It would be of a great help to me.
I just couldn't stop with Ponniyinselvan and after much difficulty I bought this book, "Nandhipurathu naayagi". I heard there are more books like, Vanthiyathevan vaaL, Vengaiyin mainthan etc. When I asked the book shop guy, he asked for the author / publication of these books. I need help in this regard as well. Kindly help.

I've heard this point of view too - that VD was a descendent of the Rshtrakutas...but there, that's theory.
Still haven't given up on the Thiruvalangadu theory, have you?:-)))
>>>Will share the details of the inscriptions soon.>>>>>

Yes :-)) Still haunting me...
That puts so many things in place - the ascendence of uttama, why RR took so many years to come to throne, what was the reason for his extreme affection for kundavai - placing her only next to himself...
It also raises a few questions, no doubt.
If this child was not RR who was he or she ?? and why this person did not come to the limelight ?
With two references available now, I don't think we can ignore this altogether:-))
interesting concept about vandiyadevan...but I vaguely recall Kalki mentioning that there is a kalvettu mentioning Vandiyadevan and Kundavai on the northern side of the temple....
And If my memory is right it doesnt mention anything about him being a rashtrakooda king....(mind you karikalan was based in kanchi to fend the RK kings away according to kalki)One would hve thought it would mention his royal titles.....however it says 'rajarajanin thiruthamakaiyar... valavaraiyar vanthiyadevar thiruthamakaiyar alvar paranthaka kundavai.....'
Dear Gokul, Your mail is enigmatic to me.Can I take it that you agree that there is a strong possibility that Arumoli was the infant who was left behind by his mother when she committed sathi? What is Tiruvalankadu theory? What questions are raised by the above supposition? Why are you so circumspect and say that we cannot ignore this altogether?Should we not be saying This is it?Even tho it contradicts the account of the PS. GR
if vandhiyadevan's ancestors were not from tamilnadu how would they earn the honor of earning the praise of tamilpulavar
i dont think any tamil scholars have praised the invaders like pulikesi or rashtrakooda kings....
'En sivikai..en pari...en kaliyiru....'
the kings waiting in the courtyard cursing the poets who are walking away with their horses and elephants which they gave vanan as kanikai which he gifted to the poets......
....muvender vanan than vali
Something like the three great kings felt proud in writing the maha vanan's name across their chests
