Kumbhakarneswara ValisvaraAzhagiya Perumal
Archeological Review 0f 1952 published 13 inscriptions – from 236 to 248.
Kumbhakarnevara:
The Kumbhakarneswara temple was a damaged structure then and they have read an epigraph of Aparajita Pallava Regional Year (R.Y) 5, corresponding to AD 900.
Gift of Land as balippatti to the servants of the temple of Kumbhakarnesvara by pallavadaraiyar of Perumur in Perumur nadu of Eekkattukottam.
The temple is renovated now. One epigraph is found outside. There are some built into the roof . inscriptions in the roof are not read so far.
The Lingam radiatesdivinity.
There is a new somaskanda moorti. The Gurukkal said that actually the moorthi isvery old and they gave it for polishing. During polishing , the stapathis sharpened the features. The original Jadamagudam became a kreedom now. Only when I saw the hands that I realized the morrti is old.
The name Kumbakarnesvara may denote worship by Kumbakarnan. The word Kumbakaran in Pingala Nigandu means a potter. ( Kuyavar). The temple might have belonged to them. Sri Rudram calls shiva a potter, black smith...
Since ASI mentions Kumbakarnesvarar - it must be denoting kumbakarnan. We have to speculate.
Valisvara:
ASI had given a list of epigrpahs as read in eastern wall of valisvara temple, western wall of the temple, northern walletc. This temple stood in 1952 with 2 prakaras close to the highway according to the village elders. Now there is no trace.of a temple. The lingam was found in a corner and a school teacher built a small shrine inside a local Murugan temple close to the highway. Village elders call him thirukkaleesvarar. This moorti also radiates divinity.
The Murugan looks different. Bigger idol in Brahma Sastha form but is with valli and deivanai. The Brahma Sastha Murugan in other temples are Bala Subramania but he is with family here.
While digging for navagraha sannidhi, an epigraph in 2 pieces emerged and some body read it as a gift for lamp, which was already published by ASI.
Gurukkal said that there seems to be an underground passage before murugan. He also said that during sand quarrying from the near by Gujasthalai river, they feelsome stone structure. May be the river would have turned cource and swallowed the temple.
Door Jam of Valisvara temple – Maduraikonda Parakesarivarman – Parantaka I – RY 2, AD 909. It mentions one Parakesari Moovenda Velalan. ( In 900 the place was under Aparajitha and now with Parantaga)
Base of North wall – RRC = RY 13, 998 Lamp by one Akkarai Singampuli to the lord Thiruvalisvaramudayar.
East wall – RY 16 of RRC
Perpetual Lamp to Thiruvalisvara by Singamperuman, village headman of Perumur.
West wall -RRC RY 16 – Gift of Land to Thiruvalisvaratandar at perumur.
The Vishnu temple is called Mummudichola Vinnagar of Simhalanthaga Chaturvedi mangalam.
Rajendra had given land to the temple of Kotravai. That Kotravai temple is also lost.
Kulothunga I gifted land to the temple for procession and sacred bath to the lord on Vishu, Ayana and Sankramana days. The place name is now Rajanarayanan Chathurvedi mangalam.
The moolavar is in sitting posture with sri devi and boo devi, but thismoorti is removed and kept aside ( not damaged)and a small moorti with sridevi and boodevi installed in the sanctum. The urchavar azhagar and Ramar are very beautiful. My photographs have not captured their beauty.
Good pictures. Whenever I see temples with tiles laid, my heart bleeds...why dont they dont have the basic common sense not to disturb the old structure. looks like bathrooms and not karuvarais...
