DEAR DR. SRIDHAR, Whenever such topics surface in the Group, inspite of your busy schedule, you find time to put the serach engine on and furnish flow of earlier mails in the topic. Very Great Service. We are indebted.
Flow also reveals the high analytic calibre of our members :: Pavithra - Ram - Gokul. Others contributions are also solicited..
Pavithra & a few others had analysed the characteration of Nandhini ... Gokul made a logical analysis - confining himself within the frame work provided by Kalki ...(mail 188) Subsequent mails tend to confirm Gokul's line of thinking .. Excellent work ... Not only PS is to be re-serialised.. Even the PS mails also!
Views are : 1. NANDHINI was daughter of Veerapandian 2. Nandhini was daughter of Sundara 3. Nandhini was daughter of Karuthiruman.
Possibility (3) is eliminated by Gokul clearly.
Permit me to make an attempt within the frame work provided by Kalki:
VOL III : Chapter 45 : Vaanathikku Abaayam :
Arumozhi expresses to Kundavai (in Nagai after the ship mishap) of having seen the "Cauverythai" in Lanka. " That Ommaithai is our Periamma. Our mother is now sitting in throne which she should have occupied. Inspite of it she has been showering affection on me" Kundavai narrates Sundara's confession. Vandhiyathevan tells Arumozhi that she resembled Nandhini. Kundavai accepted her as her sister willing to apologise for her misfortunes..
Four main characters confirm the husband-wife relationship between Mandakini & Sundara.
Vol IV : Ch 29 : Rajadarisanam Mandakini sees Sundara after several decades .. spontaneous flow of love - rather reflow!
Ch: 32 : ENNAI YAEN VADHAIKKIRAY? Sundara - after seeing Mandakini - thinks that he has again seen her ghost image (which was earlier enacted by Nandhini) and thows a lamp.Kindavai rushes in and clafies to him that she is not the ghost - but her PERIAMMA. Ch: 33 : Chozhar Kula Deyvam : Empress Vanavanmadevi confirms that Mandakini saved Arumozhi in the Cauvery as she has personally witnessed the event. Aniruddhar - with whom Sundara made a confession in early ages - confirms Mandakini - Sundara nexus. It is also revealed that Mandakini was Kodikkarai Thyagavidangar's sister (and Karayar Magal !) Poonguzhali was also present in the scene. Ch: 35 ::Chakravarthiyin Kobam : ANIRUDHAN tells Sundara ; "... please do not talk about punishing Nandhini .. she is not only the Ilayarani of Pazhuvettarayar.. but also THE DAUGHTER OF SUNDARACHOZHA...." Sundara calls him made but did not refute...
I fail to see where Kundavai has told anyone that Nandhini was born two years after Sundara departed ...
It is not possible to imagine another MAN in Mandakini's life other than Sundara. Nandhi's resemblence to Mandakini is not only confirmed by all the main characters, but also by the passers-by of Mandakini when she was brought to Thanjai by Poonguzhali...Her dumbness was mistaken as the arrogance of (Pazhavoor) Nandhini...

But it's pretty clear now, that there *must* have been another man in Mandhakini's life, don't you think? The question is, was it Veerapandian, or...??
Dear SB I agree with Pavithra secondly Kundavai and Arulmozhi even agree tht though nandhini was not born to Sundara she would still have the status of their sister as she was born to Mandhakini
Secondly Though it is difficult to imagine Mandhakini with another man maybe she was amnesic following the fall from the kalangarai vilakam when karuthiruman saves her and takes to eelam with veerapandiyan....

The question is, was it > Veerapandian, or...?? > ===========================================================
THANK YOU PAVITHRA. I THINK I HASTENED UP & MISSED SOME IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE NOVEL EARLIER... I READ VOL V - 52 TILL THE END LAST NIGHT :
It is stated that Madurantakan and Nandhini are twins; Both are born to Mandhakini - near Thanjai - when she was with Vani; Semibianmadevi's new born son was mistaken as dead and was about to be buried by deaf & dumb Vani, but Karuthiruman saved the child - who is Sendan Amudhan. The girl baby Nandhini was taken care by Thirumalai and went to Lanka. Nandhini was Veerapandiyan's daughter.
To maintain the consistancy with respect to Vol III, IV & V, it can be summarised that :
Nandhini & Madurantakan were born to Mandakini & Sundara - Mandakini became insane ... Nandhini was nurtured by Veerapandian in Lanka and tuned to become Chozha revenger - (Like We see Villain Nambiar tuning a Police Officer's son as a Thief in Twin MGR Story Kudiyirundhakoil - What a wonderful Title! for Mother) and thus Nandhini was born to Sundara, but her VALARPPU THANDHAI was Veerapandiya ...
Otherside, Madurantaka - inspite of growing in Chola heartland was tuned to become Chozhakulanasini ... Atleast Nandhini would not have approved her brother to bear the name Madurantaka - if they were VP's children...
If Nandhini was not Sundara's daughter, it could have been easier for her to accept AK's love & sit with him in Chozha throne. That itself is a revenge & run the Kingdom as Pandya-cholas!
If she was Sundara's daughter alone without VP's influence, even Kundavai & Anirudh were willing to reconcile with her...
The combo - born to Sundara & brought up by Veerapandia - did not pave her any way in a specific direction ...
Out of the two options of (1) born to & brought up by Veerapandia (2) born to Sundara & brought up by Veerapandia, I favour the Second option. Third option, born to some one else and brought up by Veerapandia - appears to be a diluted version ....
BY MAKING SUNDARA'S CHILDREN REVOLT AGAINST THEIR FATHER, VEERAPANDIAN ACHIEVED HIS BEST AND IN THE PROCESS ELIMINATED ADITHA KARIKALAN ALSO.
If that Madurantakan occupied the thone, it would have been PANDIYA CHOLAR's Rule in Thanjai .... Very much cunning ..
In Ponniyinselvan, we have seen several similarities to Mahabaratha .. Nandhini version is similar to Karna ...
But the reading provided other interesting materials :
1. Kalki talks so much about Marghazhi - Thiruvadhirai (Birth star of Rajendra).. 2. When Kundavai & Vanathi see Arumozhi & Vandhiathevan near Thirivaiyaru, Kundavai complains that Arumozhi has fallen love with Iruniulamadnthai ... (This is the beginning of the Meykeerthi of Rajendra ..) 3. K & V see Kailasakatchi in Thiruvaiyaru (In Thiruvaiyaru South Kailasam was built by Sembianmadevi and (Vada)North Kailsam by Rajendra:: Here RR's provided asylum to Vimladitham first who later became his daughter Kundavi's husband) 4. Kaliasam is the key word in RR's mind which made him construct "Dakshina Meru" - Big Temple in Thanjai...
It is clear the last few Chapters were fore-runners for Rajaraja & Rajendra's Successful Stories ... Very unfortunate that Kalki could not live long and accomplish these ...
Happy Ugadhi !
After all, our Characters had matrimonial connections with the Telugu,
1.Where is the proof that Nandhini and Madhuranthagan were born to Sundara timescale.....
2.Nandhini was with Alvarkadiyan almost nearly till Veerapanyan's death Chola Pandya utham so where is the training the pagaivans progeny concept come from?
3.Nandhini doesnt realise Madhuranthagan is his brother till the very end or is it in the after word that kalki mentions that
4Its hard for me to digest these theories please elucidate
> BY MAKING SUNDARA'S CHILDREN REVOLT AGAINST THEIR FATHER, > VEERAPANDIAN ACHIEVED HIS BEST AND IN THE PROCESS ELIMINATED ADITHA > KARIKALAN ALSO. > If that Madurantakan occupied the thone, it would have been PANDIYA > CHOLAR's Rule in Thanjai .... Very much cunning ..
That's what makes the plot so interesting:-)

To Karnan??? How?
> It is clear the last few Chapters were fore-runners for Rajaraja & > Rajendra's Successful Stories ... Very unfortunate that Kalki could not live long and accomplish these ...
Kalki himself said as much, in his 'mudivurai' to PS - that he hoped other authors would continue with writing, with the details he'd provided. I wonder who's going to.:-)
The girl baby Nandhini was taken care by Thirumalai and went to > Lanka. Nandhini was Veerapandiyan's daughter.
When you say nandhini was veerapandiyan's daughter, you mean she was born to veerapandiyan or was brought up by veerapandiyan?? It is clear in the novel that Nandhini was not born to Sundara. But it neither clear as to who is her real father, is it veerapandiyan or that other man?? I think this one is the secret which was not revealed in the novel. Kalki has left it for reader's choice. I choose to believe that Nandhini is veerapandiyan's daughter.
But it is clear in the novel that nandhini was not brought up by veerapandiyan. She was brought up by Alwarkadiyan. But when Azhwarkadiyan was not around, a wounded veerapandiyan was brought to her kudil. Probably it was then that nandhini knew about her birth. Veerapandiyan would have seen in her, resemblence to mandhakini and would have told abt the secret of her birth. He would have told she is his daughter. Otherwise why would she go all her way to help the pandyas.
Somehow I pity Nandhini. She does not get her father's or mother's love during her childhood and she had to face lot of humiliation from Kundavai. And afterwards she comes to know that veerapandiyan is her father (assumption), but as soon as she knows this, he is killed by AK. It is natural for her to hate the person, and his family, who killed her father.

In fact, Kundhavai even says that Nandhini is a 'veera marakkulaththup penn' - she set out to avenge Veerapandian's death, and accomplished it.
Look at it from the Pandya (as per PS) point of view. Imagine Nandhini as the great heroine who kills her enemies against all odds. Presents a different picture, doesn't it?
I wonder what PS might have been like, in that case.:-)
Yes I totally concur with the Dr. It has been clearlly established that Sundara didnt father Nandhini as there was a time gap of nearly two years. Secondly, Nandhini would have me VP just before the end only, as per the novel and there is noway that VP would have raised or trained her. Nandhini's sudden love for Pandyas can be attributed to her getting a golden chance of squaring with the Cholas for all the humiliation heaped on her during her childhood, as she realises that she may officially belong to the Pandya lineage and also have got an organisation to back her efforts of wrecking vengeance against the cholas. Still she is not sure about her birth secret, she gets an hint when Sundara sees her as pazhuvur rani and faints during Karikalan's ilavarasu pattabhishegam. So she goes with PP to sundara's chamber via the Nilavari in the mid-night to get the truth out. She and the Abathudavis would have been oblivoius about maduranthagan also, as the secret was know only to a few people, only karuthiruman must have enlightened them when he takes madhurantakan to the Kolli hills.
Dear Friends, I think this is a very delayed response for this debate. I don't think any body will be offended of my views.
If you notice carefully, Kalki had given more emphasis on things of which he was confident of and knew that this is what had ACTUALLY happened. Things that were not clear, Kalki hadn't given much emphasis. There are places in the novel, where Kalki himself indirectly admits somethings as his addditions. Like, the words he puts after Kudanthai Josiyar telling about the birth of a Son to Vaanathi, on a Thiruvaathirai day. At the end of the paragraph, Kalki puts these words, "Josiyar therinthE sonnarO, ookithu sonnarO yaam aRiyOm".
Well, coming bback to the original issue, in so many places Nandhini herself tells that Veerapandiyan was her LOVER and not her father. Even before the killing of Adithya Karikalan, she talks to the ghost of veerapandiyan and address him as AnbE. So veerapandiyan is not Nandhini's father.
And Kalki has devoted at least 2 full chapter in introducing Karuthiruman and telling his story. His introduction is the one that makes a twist in the tale. (Would Kalki, the genious who had produced such a gem would add a character at the end to create confusion among the readers.) His parents named him as Karutha Thirumaal, so he is a vaishnavite. This might be the reason, why Aazhvaarkadiyan was so moved towards Nandhini and wanted to make her like an AaNdal. karuthiruman is the guy who took Mandakini to bodha theevu and might have forced her to become pregnant (Putting it in straight terms raped). Since this might have been unknown to Kalki himself and he might not have wanted to add any "kalankam" to the lively characters, he might not have added these things. Also he had already created a god like imagge for Mandakini and by this time Karuthiruman came into the picture, she was dead. So he didn't want the readers to learn that she was forced to be pregnant. But he let it known to the readers thru one of his characters. Otherwise, he wouldn't have written Vandiyathevan telling Kunthavai, as to what karuthiruman had told Aazhvaarkadiyan when he was escaping along with Madhuranthakan.
This is my just my assumption and not conclusion. So please don't get offended if this contradicts your views and sentiments.
