He acted as Narasimha pallavan in Kanchi thalaivan. Interestingly, I do not know of him acting as a chola, he has done pandya / chera / pallava and misc kings for sure.

Most famous chola role - Manohara... Sivaji the Ganesan :-) Raja Raja Again by the master artist, though it was a dud.

Recently read Charu's "Naragathil irunthu oru kural". He mentions one incident. MGR hired Mahendiran (Mullum Malarum Director) for writing screenplay for PS. He asked Mahendran to stay in MGR gardens home itself and provided all the facilities. But even after 6 months Mahendiran couldn't come up with something fruitful and MGR just dropped the plan. -> It is just one of the many reasons (or Myth?) why MGR couldn't succeed in making PS.
MGR had played the role of a warrior in Mahadevi who helps the Chola Prince and Princess (Savithri).The Chola Prince is named Vikrama and he is shown as descendant of Vijayalaya Chola.
In the filmMarmayogi, MGR's character was called Karikalan. It was actually named after Karikala Cholan.Apart from this, I cant remember any other Chola role that he had donned.
