Since Upanishads has been brought into the discussion. Let us take a look at what it means first. Upa -> Near Ni -> down Shad -> sit It implies sitting down near a guru and listening to her or him. The spirit of Upanishads is learning - asking questions and understanding the what is being taught.
Knowing only govinda namam or shiva namam or ishta-daivatha namam is just one margam for people. This could be from a theistic point of view; from an agnostic or atheist point of view understanding the World would mean a whole lot. In that case "loka vidya" becomes "brahma vidya".
By admitting we have less brain power to fathom the natural and super-natural mysteries does not automatically preclude that we should not research anything.
Some people research because of passion in that particular subject; and there can be several side-effects - good and bad.
But inquiry a form of research is part and parcel of our tradition and culture. A big difference between our way of life versus the Abrahamic way of life is realizing self-realization. Some call it as the deductive framework with in our culture. We are not prescribed or given hard and fast rules about God or spirituality, but shown different ways of achieving them. It is upto each individual to traverse the path and seek enlightenment.
This self discovery path is not easy and has loads of problems. We question our tradition and our age old practices; even to the extent of the existence of gods - devas and devis.
It is said that humans DNA is very similar to Chimpanzee. Currently they have reduced the similarity from 98.5% to 95%. So for the most part we are as good as the Chimpanzee, but the 5% makes us what we are - animals with that extra perception. Curiosity is a natural trait in animals and we humans just take it to surreal levels.
If we ponder, there is not much difference between rocks and us - we all are mere bunch of molecules interacting.
Wrapping up the long winding post, we should leave it up to the individuals and organizations to pursue knowledge and research and not suggest that there is no use of such projects.

While I urge research work, I have not discouraged "enjoying", correctA? Only because some do the research others can "enjoy" the fruits of labor. For some analysis itself is an intellectual play and enjoyment.

We should not curtail inquiry, if a person is interested let him or her do it. There is no one way for leading life. Some like analysis and enjoy life; others enjoy life differently.
And for 'eberything' there is samayam. As the adage goes in Englipeechu "All work makes GRS a dull boy". There is a samayam for analysis and samayam for enjoyment.

But one more caution. The religion has provided so much answers, you can get the answers by simply believing and practising also.
