who constructed alambarai fort in marakkanam coast?
  • freinds,
i see a remnant of an old fort called almbarai fort by locals on the way to chennai in the ECR. it is in the marakkanam coast. who has built it. it appear from the google maps also.

the name looks like an arabic one:al-ambara but the outlines of it looks like a european fort.

    any ideas?

what is the history of marakkanam?

  • Dear Gandhi babu
the group trip organised on last august 15th went to this site.
some groups of our members have independently visited this site earlier too.
some lovely visuals of this site appear frequently in movies the best being in " thiruvilaiyadal arambam- dhanush, veyil, and winner

the fort is al hambra. i think the red one it means in arabic.
the muslims must have loved this name after having lost a similar fort to the christians in spain

the present fort is from nawab times.
must have been a sambuvarayar fort like sadras earlier to it.

  • Dear Gandhi babu,
I have a tiny bit of info on this fort, variant spellings for you
which may be helpful in 'googling' :
    In Cheyur taluk, right?
Alamparai, Alhamra, Alhambra [on map of ancient sites]
Satish & 'ABHIVENKAT' have been there.

"[Today we call it 'Alamparai'. when we visited there, the latest hit
was a song from 'Veyil'. Forgot the lines of the song.
    Regards, Satish "
