Big Temple
  • -Dear,

Last week I visited Big temple with a couple of friends. Vasantha
Navarathri uthsav is being conducted with spl Poojas to Vaarahi.
Dance and musical programmes are conducted in the evenings / nights.
Organisers have taken care to focus the temp dias erected near Nandhi
mandapam and illuminated the main temple. I remember to have read
that they used about 115 oil-lit torches in RR's regime during
nights! The effects seem to be comparable.

Thanks to rain God, Cauvery is getting adequate supply now. Within
3 - 4 days, our Chozha heart land will be resembling Kalki's vision! -
    - for some more time atleast!

    Fondly, sps

    Pls advise interest.

    anbudan / sps
  • Dear SPS sir,

I am there in Thanjai on 3/4th September and would like to join.
  • count me in

  • Dear SPS Sir

    Count me
  • how you organise?
meet in chennai and proceeding form there?
  • Dear Sps
please try to add malapaadi also in the trip.
members can realise the level of sophistication the chola architects
achieved from malapaadi to big temple in so short a time( say 40
    years)
another main reason is asi from tanjore is involved in copying the
inscriptions there. we could see them in action.
  • Dear SPS,

    Sep 10,11 please!
  • > > ASI guided trip. Upper floor paintings can also be
    > > seen.

If you happen to see paintings, look at the wall opposite to
    Nataraja worship at chidambaram.

If you carefully see you can identify the following :

    * A very big authentic (!) portrait of Rajaraja in a semi sukhasana
posture (!) with clasped hands in front of peruvudaiyar. Beard,
Kondai, no upper sleevs, manly mush, slight ornamentation -
strikingly similar to the one seen in chidambaram worship proving
    both are Rajaraja

    * Near him dakshina meru vitankaraana aadavallar is seen

    * Near adavallar, a highly decorated peruvudaiyar can be seen. The
ornamentation of peruvudaiyar should be seen - cannot be described
in words. You will SEE what is described in inscriptions as navamani
    and mutthu and pavalam

    * See the vidhana above peruvudaiyar - see the ornamentation

    * In the top the tajore vimana can be seen - but this portion is on
the top of panel and details not visible

(overall the panel conceptually symbolizes probably the consecretion
of big temple - the details are not proportionate but artistic. For
ex, peruvudaiyar is comparable to seated rajaraja, dakshinameru
vitankar very small, vimana is shown small etc.)

    * Below rajaraja - in the level of the eye - you will see :

Lot of beautiful girls who could have been thalicheri dance girls -
very high ornamentation - each of their hands shows some mudra

A young fellow very striking in features to Rajaraja but young with
burning eyes - could be rajendra

    Other royal members etc

    Musical instrument players

and an aweful lot of other details which I missed.

  • Hi Gokul,

Your description takes me back to the Mupperum vizha, when you
described the same things to me out side the keralanthakan vayil.
I am eagerly waiting for another chance.

SPS sir, both weekends are ok with me. Count me in.
  • Dear SPS,

This is wonderful occassion I was waiting for. Please count me too.

I will make myself free on both weekends. Either of them is fine with me.
  • > BTW, unga aduththa visit eppo? We shld plan an event when most of
    > the overseas members can participate.

Not yet planned...But with exciting new group and activities like PSVP
it should happen quite soon. If a combined visit is organized during
christmas holidays I'll be more than delighted to join you.
  • Dear Vijay and Amar
can we update the Bigtemple site please Big Temple is not an Imperial achievement!
    Sri
  • Sridhar

Instead of the site is in still under construction, I
just put some wordings similar to

    warwick-castle.co.uk's

    "Britain's Greatest Mediaeval Experience".

Sorry for that. It is removed.

Hereafter any content going to site will be
    preapproved.

We need to move the site before this Sadhaya Vizha.

Dear SPS, would you arrange a formal registration of
PSVP because I need the registration details to
    transfer.

I am not happy with this domain registered on any
individual name including me. So I am preferring the
    transfer asap.

I will post the templates tonight. You can download
that. So we can work out different pages at a time.

As Sri suggested we just go for simple site.

For header, I just have a thought of 360 degree big
temple picture in 760 pixels length. Amar, Krupa,
    Arvind think about it.

Any good idea will make worth it.
  • Hi

I think the banner should be very dominating - just like the Vimana of
the BT.The grandeur of the BT should be showcased in every aspect of
the site.Lest we do injustice to the temple!
  • Ashtathique characters of Sivam are many, SPS uncle. Rajarajeswarars I mentioned are for the functions of universe based on Itchai, Kiriyai and Gnanam. They are standing on top at the 2nd of floor of Maha Meru. Then comes another set of 8 Moortheeswarars to handle Fire, Wind, Eath, Sky.Sun, Moon etc. They are Bhavan, Sarvan, Pasupathi, Ukran, Ruthran, Bheeman, Eesanan and Mahadevan. They are also standing on the Meru. Besides this, there are 11 Rudhrar to support the livin of plants on the earth andunder the water etc., on the Meru. The the 5 bodies of Sivam- Sathyajotham, Agoram, Thathpurusham, Vamadevam, Eesanam are also there. These are the officials of the Sivam to control , to support and to finish.
I got these informations from the article of Dr.Nagasamy himself and he writes further " We found the inscription inside the gopuram walls recently with 'Sree Rajarajeswaram Udayar Sree Vimanam Pon meivithan Sree Rajaraja Devar.....' Kudavoil Balu was also with us . We jumped and danced with happy.Adinom Padinom Kalikonddadinom..etc....Then how Dr.Nagasamy can differ from Kudavasal Uncle? I will scan the portion of the article and attach, if you want.
Regarding the date of coronation of Rajarajan I got this date.' 'just after 25th June 985 '  only from K.A.Neelakanda Sastri. His 'Cholas' book is the Vedaparayana Book for me and to my Dad. This cannot be wrong.Just give me a days' time and I will give the inscriptional evidance. (my Project manager is very bad and  doesnt allow me to read books in office,) Ohm Hreem Vashat !

  • Dear Madhu,

PONMEYVITHAN subject - with scanned portion of inscription I saw in Dr. Kudavoil's book itself.

Beyond PON MEYVITHAN .. much is not visible..

I have a special previlege of having seen the Big Temple with the present day dyons - including
    Dr. Nagaswamy & Kudavoil together,
Dr. Kalaikkovan - Dr. Kudavail and Dr. Rajavelu - together
Dr. Rajavelu, Dr. Sathyamurthy and our PS Sriram (Museum) !!

This has also been discussed widely here in our group.
    Let me leave it that.

Re 25.6.985 - I think (British) Kheilbourn arrived at the date with the help of RaoBahadur LN Swamikkannu Pillai.. which were taken and put by KAN ..

But Kudanthai sethuraman worked and found Karkadaga punarvasu.

Re Rajarajeswarars - I will discuss again later.

and I see " 85 " in your mail ID... interesting..

    985 - 1985

    Keep mailing... anbudan

  • SPS uncle, I tried to understand N.Sethuraman's "Yandum - Indian type kala kanakeedum"  but it was very hard to me. I can fix Oracle 6i forms and reports problem easier than this calculations. Kheilharn and SK Pillai and N.Sethuraman calculates the date of coronation from Udayarkudi inscriptions. Yandu 3, Karkadaga Madham, Tiruvathirai star. Saturday . As he says the date falls on July 14th 988AD. He mixes with Konerirajapuram inscriptions and arrives at July 18th 985 AD as the date of Rajarajan coming to throne.
Is there any other forumula or method for fixing the dates mentioned in inscriptions?  We have to make 'Sashtanga namaskaram'  and surrender without arms to SK Pillai only, is it?

My id is having the No. 85......it is my birth year (DOB 21.1.1985) I will be returning backto India in Jan.2010 and I want to meet you uncle and all. Already I have missed the Aug 15th Meet.

Hats off. The remaining 10 names of Rajarajan in inscriptions:
    Azhagia Cholan. 2.Uthama Cholan(?) 3.Uthunga thungan 4.Uyyakkondan 5.Ulagalandhan 6.Keerthi Parakraman 7. Chola Narayanan 8.Thaila Kula Kalan 9.Rajendra Simman 10.Rajakesari Varman

  • Dear Madhu,

Uthama Cholan was RAJENDRA I 's title... Not RRC's.

It is rare - and worth looking at - that RjC and Uthama s/o Kandraditha - shared TWO titles in Common.

    1. Uthama
    2. Madurantaga.

Azhagiya cholan resembles Sundara ?! Pls check your primary source (inscription).

Rajendra Simman - remember a portion around Kottayur (near Swamimalai) was renamed so - which was earlier Paamboor naadu.
    Check that also.

Rajakesari varman & parakesari varman are common names.

Ulagalandhan - name accorded to his Chief Suveyor and the LENGTH was known as Ulagalandhan kole. RRC also might have also accredited. Check.

    CHOLA NARAYANAN is interesting... !

    thanks for the details.

You dont need to start any new blogs
Just draft them as A4 documents and we can add them to the bigtemple website itself..
The names which VJ and you have collected is magnificent infact VJ or Gokul even explianed what each name meant....
The gopuram the significance of the name the all those can be incorportaed into the site
    Kind Regards

  • SPS Uncle, the source from which I got the inscripional names of Rajarajan is the publication of Sreeman C. Babaji Raja Bhonsle Satrapati (elder Prince of Tanjore) first edition June 1997. The research author of the publication was Mr.Murugesan,M.A. Thamizhar Marabu Iyal Ayuvu Kuzhu. PonNagar, Tanjore.
This can be taken as primary source or not.....I dont know

  • hi madhu

PSVP is a family - as i said earlier, none of us are specialists /experts
nor 100% dedicated to a profession that is even remotely linked to history
etc. PS is a common thread that unite us, and despite our careers, we spend
all our free time for our passions. I am sure you will get to know the
wealth of information and people of this group.

so there are no challenges or ego's here. you asked a question, satheesh had
already taken a picture of the museum board and i just put it up.

But one thing for sure, there are some nakkeerar's needed in such a group -
when we are discussing histroic fiction vs real histrory. Its not to say
that we are experts, but to question a hyposthesis before it becomes
accepted. In the past we have questioned many experts - sometimes we have
been proved wrong, but its a learning curve for us. So in this group, we
welcome new thoughts, questions - but when you post something - be prepared
    for questions.

some of the titles you have listed are to be discussed ( is it why you have
    put a (?) against uttama)
