Every year the festival of Maham is being celebrated in Kumbakonam in the month of Masi on the day of Maham Makshathiram (9TH March 2009)
MAHAMAHAM is being celebrated once in 12 years like kumbhamela in north India.
It is generally beleived that we attain Moksham if we take bath in holy rivers. But all holy rivers get moksham if it comes to mahamaha tank. Ganga,yamuna,narmadha,saraswathi,kaveri,godavari,tungabadra,krishna.sarayu are the 9 rivers where people take bath and their sin are merged with these rivers. So all these rivers went and asked Eswaran what should they do ,to clean their sins. Bhagawan said not to worry and asked them to go to Kumbakonam Mahamaha tank to get vimochanam.
The day before Maham we have to visit Panchakrotha kshetrams , which are Tiruvidaimarudur,karuppur,Darasuram,Tirunageswaram,swamimalai.and offer prayers. Then we have to take bath in that tank.
Swami of 12 temples, at Kumbakonam come to the Tank on that day to give Theerthavari. The only Ambal (Kamakshi)is from Ekambareswarar temple.
There are 16 Siva Sannadhis around the tank.
SPECIALITY: To get rid of their sin one should take bath in a in a holy tank in a punniyakshetram. Those who live in punniyakshetram itself will get rid of their sin if they take bath in Ganga in kasi. The people of kasi will get relief if they come to Kumbakonam. But, the people of Kumbakonam will get rid of their sins by taking bath in Kumbakonam itself.
