Rajaraja and the 11
  • Dear Kamal,
I am able to see Dr. Kkvn's word of caution in every word of your
mail. Good. We are all responsible for our words.
Two things : Raja Rajan was also known as :
    1. Arulmozhi 2. Arithurkalangan 3. Irnamugaveeman 4. Ravivamsa
    sigamani 5. Rajasarvagnan 6. Rajakandiyan 7. Chatrubujangan 8.
    Keralandakan 9. Chozhamarthandan 10. Chozhathrasimman 11.
    Thelingakulakalan 12. Nithyavinodhan 13. Pandiyakulanasini 14.
Muumudichozhan 15. Jana Nathan 16. Kshathrya sigamani 17. Abayakula
sekaran 18. Ravikula maanickam.19. Rajachrayan 20. Raja marthandan
    21. Raja Vinodhan 22. Keralandakan 23. Chanda Parakraman 24. Siva
padha Sekaran 25.Chozha kula sundaran 26. Thirumurai kanda chozhan
    27. Nigarili (incomparable) Chozhan. 28. Panditha Chozhan 29. Periya
Perumal 30. Moortha Vikramaparanan 31. Jayankonda chozhan., with RR
    there are 32 names!

    His wives are Eleven :

    1. Olaga Madevi (Known as Danthi Sakthi Vidangi in Thiruvisalur
inscriptions (Pattatharasi):: With her only he performed Thulabaran
(donating gold in equal weight) and Hiranya Karbam (entering through
the mouth of a Golden cow and coming through the rear - to escape
rebirth!. Along with Kundavai, she makes the highest bid for a land
reclaimed in Thiruvaiyaru and donotes to the Temple!!
    2. Abimanvalli
    3. Ilada Madevi
    4. Chozha Madevi
    5. Thrailokya Madevi
    6. Prithvi Madevi
    7. Panjavan Madevi (Daughter of Pzhuvoor Nakkan - "Thillai
azhagiyar" - all the Chola kings had one Thrilakoya - olaga &
panjavan madevis. Panjavan madevi is equivalent to Dhraubathi -
Sacred Wife of Pandavas. Such woman hailed from the "Dev dasi"
community - grown up only for the King - supposed to be the closest
to the King. Rajendra built Pallippadai (temple in apprciation of
her bravery (some say memory) near Pzhavarai known as
Panjavanmadeswaram - Nathan koil. Her maid servant donated 9 golden
flowers to Thiruppugalur Thirugnanasambandar idol. Imagine her
    prosperity and influence).
    8. Meenavan Madevi (Princess from Pandya Dynasty)
    9. Vanavan Madevi - Vanathi - mother of Rajendra
    10. Veera Narayani
    11. Villavan Madevi (Princess from Chera Dynasty)

(Source : Rajarajan Manimandapam - Thanjai)
Even though Rajaraja had eleven wifes, he gave birth only to one son -
through Vanathi - who is Rajendran. He was born before RR ascended
to throne in 985. RR ensured that Rajendra did not have any rivalry
in ascending to throne. Panjavan Madevi should have helped him in
some form (Either in RR ascending to throne or in Rajendra not having
rivalry or saved either of them in some crucial issue. Hence
Pallippadai at Pazhayarai). Kundvai - Olagamadevi - Panjavan madevi
were not just decorative. They had their say in running the Empire!
    Fondly, SB

  • Dear SB and others,
    Thanks for the informative mail.

Purely from a logical standpoint, RR should have had more than one
son - since the no of wives were eleven. But history does not throw
any light on them. Quite mysterious.

Also, I'm not sure who was the mother of Kundavai and maadevadigal.
Was it Vaanavan mahadevi or somebody else ?
