There are 7 sthalams for performing the rituals (Pindam,Tharpanam) for dead(pithru sthalam).They are Kasi,Rameswaram,Sri Vanjiyam,Thiruvenkadu,gaya,Thiriveni sangamam and the seventh one being Thilatharpanapuri. In Ramayan, When Ravana took Sita, Jatayu tried stopping him but finally killed by Ravana.During the return from Lanka, Rama and Lakshmana did the rituals for their Father and beloved Jatayu as well.
locals know ith as thilakaipathi. close to saraswathi temple. location of aadhi vinaayagar witha human face here. it is one of the few temples in the paadal petra thevaara sthalams that are privately owned. it is owned by a gentle man who comes in the extended family that renovated kalahasti, thiruvidai maruthur,thiru kolakka, etc
Before entering the temple there is a small shrine for Aadhi Vinayakar (as mentioned), the mighty pillayar with human face. At the vicinity, there are Saptha Kannikas, on the open ground.
This place is now called 'Sethalapathi', against 'Thilagaipathi' or 'Thilatharpanana puri'. Alongwside Lord Rama, there is also a King Narchodhi, associated with this temple.
At the back of Great Lord Shiva Alais Muktheeshwara, Lord Rama and and King Narchodhi, will stand worshipping Great Lord Shiva, as Lingam. It is said, Lord Rama, did the tharpanam and the Pindams turned Lingam. The Great Lord Muktheeshwara, thus grating Moksha for Jatayu and departed King Dasaratha.
