  • Hi venketesh,
the elephant proof gate looks deadly.
    shanthi.
  • Hi Shanthi

its on the gates of the shanivargarh( fort of saturday(?))

its in pune. a small fort more of a picnic spot.

the funny thing is the gate had cannons displayed next to it. so
elephant charges co- existed with artillery in maratta times.
pune also has a 7th- 8th century rastrakuta temple right in the heart
    of the city- pathaleshwarar.

do see them if you go to pune.

  • Amazing photos Venkat.

Talking about forts in and around Pune, I think there are plenty of
them in that area. 2-3 years back I happened to visit a place called
Lohgad near Pune, I think a maratha fort..not sure.

Its almost 2 hours drive from Pune and the trekking took around 3
hours. A breathtaking view and a real breath taking trek. I do have
some photos taken there, will try to share. Nothing significant except
for a few rooms, a high raised wall around the hill, and a dharga in
the middle. I think it was built by Shivaji - probably later it fell
into the hands of mugals or other muslim ruler and hence a darga with
    a samadhi inside.

I was fascinated by the forts near Pune, because at such heights how
did they manage to take all the material and build the fort. And what
was the purpose as I dont see many buildings or rooms inside forts?
  • Another titbit.
Immediately behind the gate is a false ceiling filled with logs and
supported by just four wooden pillars. If the door is breached, the
warriors inside will knock off the pillars and the whole load of logs
will fall on the entering troops, burying them. The log pile will also
    be set on fire.

Unfortunately, the palace of peshwa's was destroyed in a fire; only the
    bases remain.

  • hi shanthi

I am not sure if pune has a 18 hole course, but they must have small
ones. and some courses with difficult putting must be in hilly
    lonawalla.

  • Even though the basis for the formation of this group is the novel Ponniyin
Selvan we've discussed almost everything from the beauty of Vyjayantimala
(courtesy our dear Mr.SPS), to Chepauk cricket lore (again Mr.SPS), to
    politics and now..Golf!
Frankly, this one just beats me!!
