Hi not only in size, the questions that can be raised about the brihadeeshwara temple too are big.
one by one the questions are being solved.
one was the shadow, the other the 21 ton peak stone wasnt one piece but composed of several but many remain
the pallava pillar inside the buddhist panels, the foreigner statue the unfinished karnas the dispropotionality of the lingam and the door size( how was it taken in?) the supposedly small foundation for such a high structure.
amazing how one structure can generate so many quesions.
> the dispropotionality of the lingam and the door size( how was it > taken in?)
Hi venkat
The lingam was installed first and then the vimanam built around it - since the lingam was installed pooja started immdly - will search and give you the year...the final consecration was after RRC donated the kalasam around 1010 AD..

Hi Vijay 2 tonne rocks being placed 200 feet above the lingam. the pujari who did the prayers must realy have beleived in god, and must have had an eye on the heavens all the time. I beleive that like the pyramids, to balance the pressure inside and outside during construction they must have filled the interiors with sand. i remember sriraman telling that the auvudaiyar seems to be many pieces jointly assembled.
Re THANJAI BIG TEMPLE / LINGAM INSTALLED, we have already discussed several factors which include ::
1. The Peruvudayar was installed first (in about 21st Year - 1006 AD) and worshipped before consecreation took place on the 285th day of 25th Yr of RRC (1010 AD).
insctiptions do mention poojas being performed in this temple prior to 1006 AD. Here there are two versions.
i) Pooja to Peruvudayar since 1006.
ii) PERUVUDAYAR NOT INITIATED (Not Energised, but positioned in 1006). In the Southern side miniature type temple, poojas were performed !
2. Those who had opportunity to see the Mezanine and upper floors (Saandaram) above Peruvudayar can understand it goes like ( Cone icecream cone - invereted) with hollow space inside.
ASI Sriram - our beloved Member - postulated that the Lingam would have been positioned, sands filled above - like cone ice developing layers - and brick structure raised (using elephants moving on the cuved-slopes & NOT STRAIGHT RAMPs - as National Georgraphy shows in its Coverage !), SIKARA (80 ton stone structure made of 8 pieces of about 10 ton each)was positioned above which about 13' long KALASAM positioned !
3. Whether the Avudayar is single piece or multiple piece. This subject - again drew controversies - appeared in varalaaru.com.
Dr. Kudavoil told the Avudayar is single piece. Dr. Kalaikkovan informed that it is made of multiple pieces.
