saivism and vaishnavism
  • Hi,
Sorry for my ignorance of history. What was the status of vaishnavism during chola period? (considering that cholas would have subscribed to shaivism, as they built shiva temple).

Any info on appar & sambandar, and kazuvil yettruthal? When they happened? Either before RRC or after that?

    Dear Senthil
    have you read Sivakamiyin sabatham.
the period of appar sambandar samanarai kazhuvil etruthal was
    immidietly after that.
must be 8th century.much before the imperial cholas. though cholas
were a small time chieftains with stamp sized territories then.
SPS do we have the date for vathapi yutham?

    hi venkat

historical inscriptions of south india & mahavamsa sources:

AD 634/635 - aihole inscription - pulikesin II conquest, He is said
to have, before this date, subdued the kings of Kalinga and Kosala,
taken Pithapur, occupied the Koler Lake country near Ellore,
defeated the Pallavas near Kanchi, and crossed the Kaveri.
AD 640 king manavamma comes to pallava court ( fleeing lanka)
AD 642 narasimha pallava takes the name vatapi konda

so 642-634 - 8 years as kalki said to prepare for revenge...
  • Thanks sps...

I heard that there was heavy fight b/w shaivites and vaishnavites.. i
wonder, how RRC being considered avatar of vishnu, built a shiva
temple (big temple), if there was so much enmity b/w both sections..
(inspite of the event of kazuvil yettruthal of sambandar)

btw, is there any info on jains, in chola empire.. if i am correct,
the jains were present as early as ilangovadigal.. is it true, that
jains were persecuted.. if so why?
  • hi viru

the shift occured during pallava time - you should read
vicithrachittan by our dhivakar sir - its an excellant insight into
the turbulent times - regin of mahendra pallavar - his initial live
as a jain and subsequent conversion...
  • Wow sir.. Religious history of india in a single mail. That was
fantastic. This gives a lot of insight and interesting, i will look
upon the old archives about the discussions.
  • Dear SPS,

Skanda and Krishna are not in the same yuga...

Muruga is from the Yuga of Narasimha and earlier to the Great Lord.
It can be said as both did something like 'Udhithanan',
oruvar netri kan pilanthu arum peru theeyaai uthithar, maamano avunar
aanavathal thaane seitha nadu kambai pilanthu uthithar.
Udhipavarukku pirappum illai irappum illai...aadhiyum anthamum illai.

Saivamum vainavamum -- oru veedu...iru vaasal..
Veetirku oli onru thevai... athuve shakti ena padum maha lakshmi...

    Well.. thats my belief :-)

There are many timelines and parallel beliefs, other wise, I agree
    completely with SPS.
  • A great comprehensive accounting of Indian religeous
    growth!
  • Beutiful synopsis, SPS, as ever.
  • hi sps sir

Read about the famous dasavathara inscription in mallai - the first
listing of this kind of tamil country. but there is a twist to the
tale there as well....buddha replaces krishna avatar!!!
  • >
    > BUDDHA has taken the Place of KRISHNA !

question again - has buddha taken the place of krishna or has krishna
taken the place of buddha at a later stage

  • Thanks you sps sir.. Excellent compilation covering all aspects of
    history..
however, there is some small hitch here..
It seems from your mail, that shiva emerged only after buddha..

In that case, Sriram worshipping shivalinga at rameshwaram seems to be
contradictory. (if that epic is considered to be true)..

Another thing is that i was thinking, Jainism was offshoot of
    Buddhism, as both advocated non-violence..

as you have predicted, this time, i dont want to generate any
    controversary..
