Descendent of the Great Chola Dynasty
  • Hi group,

I am sure this conversation might have taken place in this group.. but to have some more light on the same..

Is there still a descendent of that great dynasty, when I had asked the same question to many of my well-known they observably point out to the people out there in the palace in tanjore..but I would wan to know those,, who might possess the DNA of those mighty rulers of 10th century

for that matter for the entire Tamil kingdom. Chera, Chola, Pandiya,, are there people in there who call kings and Samrats as forefathers.. Is thatThe Tree of Dynasty jus vanishes off!!!

In recent times I seeing a documentary on ABC, which was claming that the last nawab of Hyderabad moved to westen Australia, and after becoming insolvent moved to Turkey. I was kind of uneasy after seeing this

How many faces in the pages of History would have been lost .!! Feels disturbing

  • Hi nithya
hope you read these 2 articles on the nizam.

nizam's problems are with his own kin. legal troubles mainly.
but was paid a good compensation for his jewels. 20 milion pounds and
another 20 milion to his litigants.

people out there in the palace in tanjore…..but I would wan to know
those,, who might possess the DNA of those mighty rulers of 10th
    century…

the present royals of tanjore are maharastrian.
    the telugus ruled before that
the cholas were out of tanjore by 1300. so no hope of anybody there
    possesing that precious DNA.
but seriously speaking nithya , do you think DNA alone makes a
    difference?
so many of rajaraja's descendants could not even be compared to him.
lacklusture men who dared to sit on the same throne as him.

and while speaking of dna testing we do need a credible sample to
    test against.
last month the remnants of 2 of russia's last royal family were
tested against the dna of prince philip of england who was related to
    them.
    but dont lose heart.

there are families which claim to be descendants. especially on
zamindar family of pichavaram near chidamabaram still 'crowns ' its
    elder in nataraja temple.

  • Dear Friends,

    Not only the descendants....

Can anyone tell me where exactly the palace of Chola kingdom existed?
because what we are seeing in thanjavur is not the palace of chola kingdom
but it was built by the sarfogis (I think). Some places we can see some
walls like fort walls which are made up of brick but I think this also not
built by cholas because during their period they would have built the fort
and palace using stone rather than using brick. The stone is stronger than
    brick!!

Please correct me If I am wrong....
  • Hi Group,
    THis is a interesting discussion.
Yes , the current senior prince and Junior prince(my Brother went to
school with junior prince) in Thanjavur palace are King Sarfoji
descendents. And I think the current palace was built during marathi
    kings period.
SPS Sir, do you know if there is any evidence that part of original
RRC period fort structure in existence?

Speaking of descendents of Chola Dynasty, My uncle used say that we
are descendents of Kulothunga Chola when I was a kid( He used to
brag, Nanga Kulothunga chola parambarai la vanthavanga!!!

I never got a chance to talk to my uncle about the above statement
after I grew up. But when I traced my genealogy with my father, we
were only able to trace our genealogy for past 7 or 8 generations.
All these people have lived in the places in between Madurai, Trichy
    and Thanjavur.

BTW, Since I am new to this group, let me introduce myself. I am
Shirley, originaly from Thanjavur( my beloved home town)but
currently I live in US. I joined this group for 2 reasons. One, My
love for Amarar Kalki's books and Two, My love for Indian History.

Though I am Engineer, I love history. And I really appreciate the
    experts knowledge in this group.

The first tamil novel I ever read was Kalki's PS. Instantly I fell
in love with his work. Then I read PK,SS, Solaimalai Ilavarasi, Alai
    Osai.. etc
I'll end this by saying I really enjoy being in this group and
    appreciate all your opinions.
    rgs,
    Shirley
  • Hi Shirley,

I remember seeing your post sometime back in the group. I was curious
at that time to ask whether Shirley was you name at that time, since
that I found to be an unusual name.
  • hi shirley...
that was amazing intro about yourself.. and i found it bit nostalgic..
as i was also born in that soil.. and spent my childhood days near sivagangai park,
my grand pa use to take us to the park and the near by ramar temple often... after he finishes his classes..
i miss that town very much.. as of now, i dont have any roots out there.. Everything sold and through
am a banker and settled offshore.. but still those days haunt me to and a pining weather i wuld go to those good old days..

ya its apparent, that i feel in love with PS novel and its words,
infact it has become a time machine for me to travel down to those places which i wan to go in real.. as kalki himself describes it in the intro..
i hope you would have also read the novel on RRC, by balakumaran . named Udyaar..

I have never asked my people out there at my home about the decedents. as their know-how about the same is sparse, as they are much more spiritual than historical..

Found this group to be a brilliant one.. Which is always on a buzz about PS.
  • theres one descendant of kalinga/telugu cholas apparently that orissa balu
sir talks frequently about... he told me last time I met him in Chennai that
this king ( who is really recognized as a king in orissa) has settled down
in chennai to avoid publicity and is probably gonna be tested for dna
samples through some connectioon that orissa balu sir has... balu sir, why
dont you give us some background on this king...
  • Also, (from what little biology I understand) DNA
tests will show-up descendents only on the maternal
side; basically, we can figure out RRC-Vanathi's
    daughter's daughter's daughter's ... daughter (or son)
living today, assuming we have DNA samples of Vanathi
    of course:)

    arul.
  • He lives in Sterling Road .. Nungambakkam !

    sps
  • of course, thats what balu sir told me too... do you know him, SPS?

btw, to answer the base for dna comparison, I asked balu sir the same
question... he said they have some base samples to compare against... am not
    sure from where...
  • A big hello to Ponniyin Selvan members.I am a new member. Its interesting
to know about the Cholas.Like other people here i am also curious to
know who were the present descendents of the Cholas and Pandiyas.

I too read in junior Vikatan about the Pichavaram zamin family. What we
know is only the Cholas had the right to get crowned in Chidambaram
temple through the history of Kutruva Nayanar history in Periya Puranam.
These zamindars were know as Cholanar.I got some info about these
    zamindars.

1844 - Rathinaswamy Surappa Cholanar was crowned

followed by Ramabadra Surappa Cholanar(Year unknown)

1944 -Andiyappa Surappa Cholanar was crowned

1978 - Chidambaranatha Surappa Cholanar was crowned.

It is said that the members of the Zamin family are now living in a
place called Chellappan Pettai near Pandanallur.
In 2004 in Jaya TV Programme "Achamillai Achamillai" film actress
Lakshmi interviewed the Zamin family. In that programme two historians
told about the possibilites of this family to be a Chola.

I came across one info about the existence of the Cholas during the
16th century AD.This is mentioned in the book called "Pandiyar Varalaru"
    written by Sri.Mangala Murugesan.
It mentiones about one Chola called Veera Sekara Chola who occupied the
territories of the Pandiyan who ruled some portion of the Pandiyan
country. The Pandiyan is identified as Chandrasekara Pandiyan.
  • If anyone needs further info please let me know. There are also some
surprises which you could hardly believe.

Hi, watched an interesting episode in the history channel yesterday -
about the DNA sequence that could possibly be that of ghengis khan
( though at first it sounded a bit inconvinving)...read on

An international group of geneticists studying Y-chromosome data
have found that nearly 8 percent of the men living in the region of
the former Mongol empire carry y-chromosomes that are nearly
identical. That translates to 0.5 percent of the male population in
the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today.
  • Dear SPS
    Well said
I remember aslide I saw in a presentation

    Statistics is like a Bikini
    Reveals a lot
    But hides the importnat bits!!

    Hi

actually this was first said of tax returns
what is reveals is suggestive, but what it conceals is vital.
came in the readers digest years back
    but another aspect of statistics
if you have one leg on a hot stove and one in the fridge , on the
    average you are comfortable.

  • Madan watches helplessly as a great subject is torn to pieces.

Not that you all do not know - but my two cents worth:

    1. There are two kinds of data
    a. Data based on the population
    b. Data based on samples of the population

Statistics works on the data - so inferences can only be as true (and
as revealing) as the data you give it.

    2. Statistics is to decision making as assumption is to maths.

    I rest my case.
