Sorry for digressing. My question is on Uthirakosa mangai. The name suggests there is an equivalent place on the southern side. Uthira -> is another form of "Uttara" meaning North? Please do let me know, if there is another place or is it from another lore that we have a place called as such.
This Utharakosa Mangai is near Ramnad, approachable from Tuticorin as well. South side.
But that is an interesting view point. If Beyond Ramnad itself is denoted UTHARA was there any Dakshina - farther South? Not heard of. but will look for.
Uthara-kosa-mangai Utharam = Upadesam Kosam = Ragasiyam Mangai = Parvathi The place gets this name because the secrets of ' Vedagamas' were told to Parvathi devi by Lord Shiva. This explanation is from the book " Thirumurai Thalangal" by Pulavar Jaya Senthilnathan, published by 'Vardamanan Pathipagam'. This book covers the 276 thirumurai places , giving in brief the sthala puranam, special anectodes, a description of the temple & also comes with a route map. This is the place where Parvati was born as a fisherwoman & the Lord marries her. (Thiruvilayadal) There is a saying in this region, "Mann Thonriyapothe Mangai Thonriyadu" to denote how ancient the place is.The inscriptions on the Moolasthanam wall has Mandodari's name mentioned there. This place is also believed tobe the "Elavanthigai Palli" mentioned in Sangam Literature. All the above is from the same book.

Hi this is perhaps the best book available on the 276 thevara sthalams. its complete. the last pages include the devaram on kiliyanoor( a place not yet identified) u.ve. saminatha iyer did the first book on the devara sthalams. in that there were only 274 temples. the thiruvidaivai near koradachery was not discovered to be a devara sthalam yet.( somebody scraped the plaster on the kouil walls and discovered a full devaram etched on it.)i think this is a first time. can somebody tell me where else a devaram is etched as an inscription. 'ra.ye. so' another author also did a book in the 50's. the book is still under print by the spic foundations i suppose. the senthil nathan book is the most comprehensive and comes with a map. most of the people who have seen more than 200 of these temples can thank only this book. i guess less than a handfull would have seen all 276. ganeshan from our group has seen 270. Hi Venketesh, Thanks. Appo ungala pathalum punniyam kidaikum ! Of course Kailayam now is not a tough yatra if you have the means. All the very Best to your son in his Exam. Is he a Vidya mandir student too? Both my children studied there.
Of course Kailayam now is not a tough yatra if you have the means.
hi Shoba, thats right. if you have the means you can be transported in a helicopter land at the banks of the manasarovar and see the hill from there. no breathing trouble, no altitude sickness at all. and soon a super highway is coming close to the area. the chinese government has started work. then we can drive from lhasa.
check out GUGE in the google/ wikipedia. an entire kingdom thrived around the kailash hill. lots of archeological work going on there.
it was at a place called nerkuppai in sivakangai district
just before the town was a place called MAHIBALAN PATTI with an ASi board saying there was a kudavarai koil of 7-8th century there. also from the grooms house I could see the Piranmalai( a devaram shrine, also vallal paari's home town)
both I could not visit because i was accompanying the couple as the maternal uncle - but sure I was in two minds
