Hi was in tanjore today. visited the big temple. work going on in north phase. main temple not being touched though scaffolding is suggestive of something.
the main college in tanjore is called kunthavai nachiyar college. that i already knew. today i saw the muncipality swimming pool named kunthvai nechal kulam. two things struck me. its tough to imaging kundavai in a swim suit and 2 thy should hav named it after punkuzhali for she swims better.
Punguzhali might be a demi god for this group, but not for outsiders. being a fictitious character how can you expect her name for a public place. Kundhavai makes more sense in tanjai.
In Thanjavur (almost in the entire district) so many personalities have been naming themselves as Rajarajachozhan, Rajarajan, Veerachozhan, Vanathi and Kundavai !
May be someone in the family of Local Body Head was named Kundavi !
And tried to locate a sculpture (patteswaram) posted by me in Photo section .. including RRC / Olgamadevi photos / udayarkudi inscriptions etc., most of them missing now !
See, My Father named my two cousin sisters ,one as Vanathi and another as Nandhini. But he didnot named me in those characters.I think he likes only these two characters in PS. One of my relative has name as Ponniyin Selvan,we used to call him as Ponni. And another guy as ArulMozhiVarman, and we call him arul.
On the lighter side: Depends on what era of J.J you are talking on swim suit (She was charming once...)... i am sure, on the other hand...people who have seen the Raja rajan - the Sivaji movie, wont want the swim suit discussion about kundavai anymore. Into a more serious note: One need not swim well to have a swimming pool on her name... the very fact that Cholas commanded the best Navel arsenal must be more than a warrant to rename the indian navy vessels into those names, see if our Chola pithrukkal can help in warding of the deaths of innocent fisher men on these waters. Even otherwise, atleast chennai port trust can be named after Rajarajan... ok I think I am asking just too much :-)
In Maharastra every towns, cities have Sivaji statue and Mumbai Terminal named after Chatrapathi Sivaji terminal.
In TN people were fighting for Rajaraja Cholan belong to their caste.
If we talk about Perarasar Rajaraja Cholan Airport for Trichy(I am not aware that some caste leaders reserved it already) could be the funniest comedy of this century.
Nobody there to voice this and people who could do are not ready.
TN politics will not talk about historical aspirations but address voters base, nurture caste mongers(divide and rule).
Rajaraja Cholan might have struggled too hard to unite TN and succeeded to made it empire!
> TN politics will not talk about historical aspirations > but address voters base, nurture caste mongers(divide > and rule). > > Rajaraja Cholan might have struggled too hard to unite > TN and succeeded to made it empire! >
> > Rajaraja Cholan might have struggled too hard to unite > TN and succeeded to made it empire! >
what struggle?
I think we are too much sold on the impression kalki gave us.
I dont think that there is any historical reference to RRc being benovelent to his enemies. the sinhalese chronicle cula vamsa talks about rrc's armies looting their tempples. venketesh
Dear All Interesting you should mention navy My uncle came for a conference by An Air India and the Flight was called Thanjavur ...Inside apparaently had details of RRC and exploits
rrc's armies looting > their tempples. > venketesh >
According to the Hottur inscriptions of Satyasraya, dated in A.D. 1007-08, the Chola king " here called Nurmadi-Chola and named Rajendra " ( rjc under rrc>>>>)having collected a force numbering nine hundred thousand had pillaged the whole country, had slaughtered the women, the children and the Brahmans, and, taking the girls to wife, had destroyed their caste
I have heard / read about this about RJC, not just in Hottur but more towards MP also. RRC was more of a diplomat compared to RJC, I personally believe that was the reason why RRC is known as a great emperor than RJC even thought the later had more territory and virtually unchallenged.
I saw the statue last week. i showed it to a few and like a chain reaction more than a hundred gathered pointing to the man.
well you use the term 'surveyors hat' very aptly. the statue is most propablu of lambton, the surveyor general of india ( boss of mr. everest)
during the great trignometric survey of india he climbed the temple and the instrument weighing a ton slipped. i think the replacement statues were done in his face cut. in fact he stayed in tanjore for one year without any work. " pinai kaithi maathiri pidichu vachiruppangalo?)
