I happened to read somewhere that, RJC goldroofed the tiruvarur temple. But i have never seen any gold roofing in this temple, during my numerous visits to this great shrine(Tiruvarur being my native place). Have i missed it by oversight or was it removed anytime by anyone. I tried to search in our site, but cudnt get any clue on this.
chidambaram always had a connection to gold. like the king who bathed in the sivaganga tank and came out " gold plated" . this is the oldest legend of the temple.
so covering it with gold was logical. any other temple being covered with gold just shows the ego of the king
but right now we need to list he temples in tamilnadu that have a gold covering
kasi vishwanathar temple was covered by gld by ranjit singh -the lion of punjab says an article in vikadan diwali malar. incidentally he also covered the harmandir sahib at amritsar with gold there are rumours that he willed the kohinoor diamond to the puri jaganath temple( disputed)
Tiruvannamalai is another temple that has/had(?) gold gilding.
(Aragalur, Attur Taluk, Salem)... "His title Ponparappinan (one who covered with gold) has been considered obscure a scholar who surmised that this might refer to his having gilt the temple at Tiruvannamalai and also his having re-gilt the temple at Chidambaram."
