They say that Tamilnadu will be benefited by the Rama Sethu project but the available economic viability report does not indicate that at all. The CM never talks about how it will benefit the state. Has he given any figures to substantiate it? Is there an economic need for it in the first place?
Perhaps it is for the same reason that the project was only discussed for 150 years and never felt worthwhile to implement. Consider this - If there was real economic value, such a project would have been undertaken long back, probably even during the British time.
Certainly the project is going to be benificial in many respects.. 1. Lots of time saved (for ships). 2. As a result, costs of goods arriving to Tamil Nadu or India will be saved. 3. The costal districts of Tamil Nadu will be benifitted (Lots of chance for many harbour expansions. For example one in Tutucorin and Kanya Kumari Dist). People will have a change earn their livings (eg setting up warehouse etc). These advantages are going to certainly out weigh the disadvantages (example fishing). And the fisherman is going to get good life. (Note: Some people doesn't like the welfare of poor people. They want them to be always poor.. VERY SAD) 4. Transportation will increase 5. Also for India's own security reasons, this should be done. We (Tamil Nadu) people's will get entrapped especially the southern part if any one start attacking using Sri Lanka as a base. China and Pakistan may be among them. Reason: Very difficult for the Navy to patrol the southern parts.
Above all these, this is prestegious project for Tamils. Its Tamil Vs others. Being a Tamil, I felt very insulted when SOMEONE issues fatwa against our CM. Dont you guys feel ashamed of all these. First Tamils should UNITE.

Cool off. How do you know how any of us felt about that issue? This is a forum of intellectuals and I think this topic is beyond its boundaries. We don't normally express ourself s beyond what we should to this forum. We will discuss the technical details here and keep of the political perception to other forums or to personal mails.
Hi > Certainly the project is going to be benificial in many respects.. > 1. Lots of time saved (for ships).
when this project was conceived a 150 years back ships were relatively small. now ( vijay will be able to explain) many of the oil tankers will not be able to navigate the channel.
3. The costal districts of Tamil Nadu will be benifitted
they may also get harmed with oil spills and shipping related pollution. we have some of the finest bio reserves in that area.

it will also increase Ltte shipping in the area. and in the times of inter continental ballistic missiles nobody wants a base near the enemy.
> > Above all these, this is prestegious project for Tamils. Its Tamil Vs others. Being a Tamil, I felt very insulted when SOMEONE issues fatwa against our CM.
first the Cm issues a derogatory statement against a god of a community. in another country he would have lost his job. people do react according to the intensity of their religious beleifs. in my opinion both vedanthi and karunanidhi were wrong.
I suggest any political debate on this from now onwards should move to the private areana.
Dear Siva, I'm sorry to discuss political issue if I discussed politics (Which I dont think so)
Think of the time when "THEVIA PULAVAR" Thiruvalluvar's statue destroyed in B'lore. How many people raised object or concern? Was that TOPIC discussed in this forum in such fervor? I dont think so.
>when this project was conceived a 150 years back ships were >relatively small. >now ( vijay will be able to explain) many of the oil tankers will not >be able to navigate the channel. Probably we have dredge little more :)
>they may also get harmed with oil spills and shipping related >pollution. we have some of the finest bio reserves in that area. So many cities flourishs that have shipping links.. Anyway advantages are more than these minor disadvantages.
>it will also increase Ltte shipping in the area. >and in the times of inter continental ballistic missiles nobody >wants a base near the enemy. I dont feel Ltte is more harmer than China or Pakistan. Anyway Ltte is fighting for Tamils cause. (Lets not discuss this anymore). About your second point, even in this modern warfare, even the developed countries uses the neighbouring countries are base. Recent events are good example..
Mr.SPS, I didn't raised the Ram Sethu issue in this forum. It was totally unwarranted and that discussion between 'RAM' and 'HANUMAN' was totally uncalled for. So, as per your rules these things are allowed. But If I question, then that is a issue. I would really appreciate if this forum only discusses Tamil Novel related issues. Have some rules set, so that the thread starters can adhere to. I feel alien in this group. May be its not the right place for me. May be its only for, so called, "INTELLECTUALS". Long live "INTELLECTUALS" BYE.
Well if you want a thread that links the sethu to the chola clan...there is vengaiyin mainthan ( akilans sequel to ps), he talks of the naval assault by rajendra on king mahinda ( of rohanam) ...if i remember correctly - rajendra's fleet was so massive that when the first ship reached lanka the last ones were still in port in india....so rajendra built a bridge of ships resplendant in all their glory,as ram built the bridge of stones..
while the discussion on sethu started in this form long before my post of the dialogue mentioned below ( came to me as a forward and i personally found it a light hearted pun and hence put it into the group) ...i apologise if it hurt any sentiments and will refrain from doing so in future. However, what pains me is that depsite there being hundreds of other interesting and thought provoking articles put forth in this forum ( as i would assume in others as well), an innocent no harm intended humourous post garners so much of limelight and backlash. If you want my personal views on this, you can search through our archives else write to me and we can have a no holes barred spar.
What sps sir meant by giving you the credentials of some of the people in this forum and their works, is just to remind us that there is so much more constructive work that can be done if we can channelise our energies towards them - we are only talking of book publishing, archeology/research etc but simple things like temple cleaning work. the members of this forum are doing yeoman service in these diverse fields and not all of them are doing so in search of money or fame. its our innate drive to restore the rich heritage and lies forgotten - there are many ways to do this but it can only be done by showing restraint and being patient. the cause is noble and the path is tough - and hence the rewards are doubly satisfying. Please do what little you can to this constructive cause like the squirril did to sri ram....
First we are Indians and then comes the linguistics barrier... When we are proud to be Tamils, we should apply our sense to figure out what is beneficial and what is not. No expert so far has given a 'ok' for Sethu samudram.
Leaving this apart, I have read that, in Ramayana, when Sugreeva sends his army in all directions to search Sita, he addresses the army which goes to the south, ie. Hanuman and co. He says, 'Beware, while going dont ever enter the Podigai malai. Just salute sage Agasthiyar from far away and proceed, because if you enter Podigai malai, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of Tamil Sage agathiyar is teaching and you will forget your duty'. I think its from Valmiki Ramayanam, but I am not sure.
