  • Hi ,

    Anaivarukkum aadi perukku vazthukkal.

Being a Trichy bred guy, I have enjoyed with my friends many Adiperukku's on the banks of Kaveri. Apart from the Kaveri kuliyal, kalandha saadham and the 'sight seeing' the most interesting part was to watch the dare devlis jump from the trains into swirling water, which they stop by pulling the emergency chain. This was like a veera valyattu.
  • Hi sundar

just curious. so many of you living in the banks of the cauvery have
such memorable experiences on adi perukku.

what used to happen when there was no water in the river( or is this
a recent phenomenon with dams in karnataka)
how was adi peruku celebrated in a year of drought?
    venketesh
  • Very pathetic venkat

My own native village is on the banks on cauvery and I vividly
remember the reddish waters of adip perukku when we - as boys - would
    not dare to swim !

    Good old days...

Now, This overall custom of celebrating the perukku itself is slowly
waning - at least in our village side

    > how was adi peruku celebrated in a year of drought?
  • HI Venketesh
No water in kaveri during adi perkku must be a recent phenomenon. I was in Trichy till 1984, atleast till then Kaveri was full during Adi 18, just for that occasion ( couple of days before 18) govt would open the Mettur dam. I havent had the unfortunate experience of seeing Kaveri dry during Adi 18.
  • I had been in trichy for about 4 years during my UG, and all the four
years rain did not fail and adi peruku was celebrated with usual
enthu. That was an holiday for trichy and we end in a theater,
    etc........

On the next year a tragedy that happened at Ammamandapam shook me to
the core. A friend of mine drown in the very banks along with his
brother and cousin. That incident always comes to my mind if there was
a talk about flood at Kaveri.
