the fort in tranquebar was built by danish not dutch
there are several temples to shiva seeing the sea. its just that sometimes the sea embraces and swallows the temple. old timers of chennai remember kasiviswanathar on the ennore highway before it fell into the sea.
even the seaside temple in mahabalipuram has a shiva lingam inside.

Yes I agree with Venketesh that there are (atleast one i know) temples with Shiva facing the sea...
2 yrs back i went to Mamallapuram and on the way back to chennai i wen to another archaeological site (near Puli kugai) whr they were unearthing some old (they say oldest in TamilNadu) temple...
