Indian Flag
  • Has anybody wondered that the tricolour actually represents the three major religeons
    Saffron:Hindus
    White Christian
    Green Islam
  • Yes Sri
the fundamental of the flag was that. gandhi however said white was
for all minorities.the sikhs demanded yellow to be added or the
    religious significance be ignored totally.

but however Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later became India's first
Vice President, clarified that the adopted flag and described its
    significance as follows:
"Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or
disinterestedness. Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains
and dedicate themselves to their work.
will some one explain it to our leaders????

    other trivia
the tricolour was much talked about since it resembled the irish
flag. ireland was also fighting for independence from britain.

the present flag is reportedly developed from a design by an ex
railway guard pingali venkayya from andra.

ashok chakra in a subtle way remembers an ancient king of this land.
the other country to do it is israel which has a star of david on its
    flag.

most countries have rectangular flags. swiss flag is square and its
reverse is the red cross flag

turkey uses the flag of the ottoman empire still
nepal has a 5 sided flag

libya's flag is just a piece of green cloth.
  • Isn't the italy flag that is similar to indian flag?
  • Colors Of The Flag:

In the national flag of India the top band is of Saffron colour,
indicating the strength and courage of the country. The white middle
band, indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The last band is
green in colour shows the fertility , growth and auspiciousness of the
    land.

This is what we were taught in schools. Before we extend the definition
we must go back to the original congress or government documents for a
    correct interpretation.

italian flag has vertical stripes instead of horizontol like indian.
    and no saffron. only red

The Italian flag is a rectangular drape, vertically divided into
three equal sections: green, white and red. The three colors of the
flag represent, symbolically, the three cardinal virtues:

    Green = Hope
    White = Faith
    Red = Charity

    eaten Margherita pizza????
The popular pizza Margherita owes its name to Italy's Queen
Margherita who in 1889 visited the Pizzeria Brandi in Naples. The
Pizzaioli (pizza maker) on duty that day, Rafaele Esposito created a
pizza for the Queen that contained the three colors of the new
Italian flag. The red of tomato, white of the mozzarella and fresh
green basil was a hit with the Queen and the rest of the world.

  • Dear Venkat and all

Asokha chakra also signifies the 24 hours in a day doesnt it
an interesting link on the flags of India

I personally feel all the states of India should have a flag and all official buildings should have the national flag and the provincial flags as well like the staes and canada and europe
  • Dear Rahul
I beg to differ we are a generation who are making changes and one of them is keeping your party designs in your home and car and just hoist the national/regional flag in public
If you fly into vancouver airport you will be welcomed by the maple leaf flag as well as all the provincial flags with their dates of joining the union
    which is impressive
  • I think Karnataka state is having thier state Flag also.Expecting Bangalore friends to react

  • dear doctor;
what is the purpose of having a separate flag for each state? It shouldn't
be done just for the sake of having a different flag. If Canadians and
Europeans have it, it is because there is not much of a difference between
adjoining states. Do the different states in Canada converse in different
dialects, eat different food, dress differently, etc, etc?
For those countries they are trying estabilish the differences between the
states by having different flags as there is nothing much to
differentiate.Hence the effort in differentiating one from the other.
Here the story is exactly the opposite. We are trying estabilish that all
states belong to India and they should not function like a separate country.
Already each state is having its own language, food, dress, traditions, etc,
etc. Here the challenge is in keeping the states together under ONE flag i.e.
    the tricolor.
In my opinion giving each state a different flag is meaningless as there are
already enough differences, some differences are so deep that they seem to
    have no solution.
  • If Canadians and
    > Europeans have it, it is because there is not much of a difference
    between
    > adjoining states. Do the different states in Canada converse in
    different

    Hi rahul
some countries have states that are much more different from each
    other than us.
i can quote the example of quebec state in canada. french speaking and
they even had a referendum on whether to seperate from the canadian
    union.

  • Dear Rahul
the reason you need a state/provincial flag is to have a unigue identity...In a country like ours we have been divided on linguistic basis yet there are religious, community and what have you variations so you have your state flag...

    Thanks Venkat
Quebec is french canada ....likewise wales, scotland and england have their own flags though they are UK
the regions of switzerland and germany have their own flags like one for bavaria...bernese oberland etc....

In fact the US and canadian flags even have dates the states joined the union...

its just a different perspective I'd anyday like to see a bumber sticker of tamilnadu or a flag of tamilnadu than that of a political party or a sectorial outfit
  • Karnataka does not have its own official flag. However, a flag designed by
one kannada writer (yellow-red, signifying manjal-kumkumam for mangalam) has
become a huge hit here with the kannada organizations, due to its
simplicity. This flag is unfurled/hoisted during functions (sometimes even
government functions). But, you would not see the CM unfurling it during
    Republic Day functions.

This flag is like a security sticker that prevents your vehicle/building
from vandalism during times of riot (which is not so infrequent these days).
  • the flag which has become a defacto symbol
of karnataka belongs to the kannada chaluvali
(vattal nagaraj) party. i am also part of the
silent majority, though i would have read PS
atleast 4 times ( i have lost count). i have
no doubt that PS is a great read, every time,
irrespective of the number of times you have
already read it. another book you can read
many times over is yavana rani. however,
there is no comparison between kalki and
sandilyan. kalki not only has the material
to deliver, but also a great vehicle
(mastery over the language and an inimitable
style) to deliver it. sandilyan, though a story
teller, lacks the language. in yavana rani,
he does use the word "tumbler". you can never
see such a horrible blunder in kalki's work.
however, among kalki's works, i like only PS.
i like kadalpura, also by sandilyan. problem
with sandilyan's writing is that he spends
an extended period in the "sirungararasam".
some of his other works are unreadable.
sorry, if there are any sandilyan's diehard
    fans onboard. no offence meant.
