Lecture about Chola History..
  • Dear All,

Today I went to the guest lecture by Dr Indira Peterson. It was about a
paper done by her on Sarfoji's
assertion of his lineage. But really I did not have the mind set to hear
    about a submissive King, even
even though he has done a great deal to Big Temple.
Only two of her points made me sit up and take a note.
    1. During Sarfoji's time he and the poets around him were not aware that the
temple was built by Raja Raja.
One of his poet has sung a song which states that the temple was built by
Karikalan and a history of chola's
compiled at that time states about all other kings except Raja Raja. Some
facts to support her points were
the name of the temple and god which was actally Rajarajeswaram and
    Rajarajeswaran was changed to
Braghadeewara and Aavudayar( and some things like that).
    2. Only one poet has sung about Periya Koil and it was Karuvur
Thevar.Shesaid he was of Raja Raja period.

Many of her slides had the tanjore paintings(which I could not see clearly
as I am recovering from a laser treatment).

The real comedy was at my company. My manager cannot understand how a guy
like me would be interested in attending
a lecture about history of cholas!!!!!
  • a submissive King,

sarfoji was indeed a submissive group to the british but their
libraries are excellent. one of them was a surgeon I have heard.
finally the last king was brainwashed by a christian missionary
called swatrtz( or nearabouts) and gave up his right to rule.

  • According to her Swatrz was Sarfoji's teacher. Before his death
he got pleaded the british to make his son the king of thanjaviur.
And the british kept their promise to make his son the king, but
after his death thanjavur was without direct desendents and went
    in to the british stomach.

I should have asked this question, if there were no direct desendents
what is the relationship of the family now claiming to be their desendents.
  • Oh ! How did you find time ? regards / sps
  • Hi

    adoption was common.

sometimes even from the daughters side as in the case of pudukottai-
the only real monarchs here with a gun salute.

for three generations they have picked daughter's sons to continue.

but some royal families had very large families and some descendants
    were poverty stricken.

what would happen to a third son of a third son of the third son of a
king. when his third cousin is the monarch he would be in penury.

It may be hard to beleive Sivaram but I came across this authentic
    incident.

an old man called "mayandi" in alwarpet corner used to have a
puncture shop. his direct great grand father was a king of a major
state in tamil nadu. he never told me that but somebody who knew him
    in the fifties confirmed it.
