I recently came across a person, who my office mate introduced to me as his friend. Just a casual hello and bye in our office function. The which attracted me was this persons turban. He was wearing a turban in typical Sardarji style. When I enquired my collegue as whether its style of anything specific, he said, he is a tamilian but belongs to a particular community in a village near Tiruchi, where they wearn turban. He is not sardarji but a tamilian.
I was amazed to hear this. Do anyone know of such custom or tradition or the community who wear a turban in sardarji style, in or around Tiruchi area? Please throw some light if you have come across such thing.
Hi Saish There is one group of people who follow a sect called 'Meyvazhichalai' near Pudukkaottai ( I think so). They used to wear a turban with a haf moon shaped pin. That sect became contoversial in the mid seventies and was subjected to raids and probe.
I dont know about Trichy, but have seen many in Madurai, which is my native. They wear a saffron turban with a crescent in it and they are followers of a sect (or is it a cult?) called 'Mei vazhi saalai'. In fact I have a few relatives who were followers of this. I think the place is Annavasal, Pudukkottai where their headquarters is located but not really sure of their philosophy etc. And there is a temple in Madurai for them also.
Interestingly, I remember to have read a marriage or someother function invitation from a family practicing that cult several years ago. Some of the Tamil letters were not there and they replaced it with alternate letters. Will go through my archives and see if it is there.
