ah..atlast a topic in PS to discuss after quite some time. I think I have written this earlier, but still...
I heard that Meru is North Pole. All celestial bodies revolving around it, 6 months day, 6 months night, all the kandams aer south of Meru etc are well attributed to North Pole (Artic). So north pole has some prominence in our hindu philosophy..probably thats the adobe of Shiva and like current day Madurai being mistaken for the Sangam valartha Madurai, Mt.Everest might have been mistaken for Shiva's adobe.
RRC would have thought that no one can go to north pole(atleast in those days) and hence thought of bringing it over here. Same is the case of Kailasanathar koil in Kanchi. Rajasimha wanted to bring the adobe of sivan to the common mans reach. RRC is not just impressed with Kachi petu periya kattrali, but also copied its concept, may be in a bigger way.
Also, heard from one of a prominent person who is doing a great lot of research about Mahabaratha and to some extent ramayana that Ayodhya shoud have been far more north than the current ayodhya..may be somewhere in Russia..edhu eppadi erukku..

As described by Mr SKA" North pole has some prominence in our hindu philosophy". Whereas this need to be only himalayas (dreamt as the peak of universe, also lord Shiva��s adobe. But this entire concept is limited to only Indian sub-continent (South Below Himalayas).
By historical evidences herein India, the " North is experienced as the source of trouble & fear", which still prevails in many parts of Indian main land.
Here, " Dakshina Meru", is the simple denote for a source proclaimed par with Himalayas & Kailash the place of lord Shiva.
