mangalasasanam and thevaram and antiquity of temples
  • dear swetha
you have missed more than a point.
a temple with a song about it is steeped in antiquity. but that does
not certainly mean the structure is as old.
    one local example
mylapore temples structure 1s only 300 years old but the poompaavai
pathigam is around 1300 years old

very few if any temple looks the same at the time the saints sang
    about them

6-9th century the temples were adorned with the hymns
the cholas in the footsteps of sembian mathevi then set about making
    them all katralli.
then came the pandyas with t he images of fishes on the stone roofs.
    finally the vijayanagar empire.
in the late 1800s and early 1900s the nagaraththars of chettinad took
it upon themselves to renovate the temples and replace brick with stone.
kalahsthi, thiruvannaamalai, a part of rameshwaram and madurai along
with about a 100 temples ( saivaite ) are all a part of nagaraththaar
    thiruppani.
