Along with my Ambulimama and 'irumbu kai mayavi,' I read this Kalki's story 'Kethariyin Thaayar' in 8th or 9th std.
Many would have read it elsewhere.
=========================
For those who had not: A Brahmin family. Beautiful Mother. Son goes abroad for studies. Father dies. He returns. 'His mother is treated into widowhood after the loss of her husband.' The son misses the beauty and the radiance of his mother. The son falls sick, hates society and dies. [Am I correct?]

this story had a big impact on me when I was a teenager.
"It told me that Society is not always right."
this story wanted people to question the 'so called' societal values...
Capitalistic or Socialistic or Democratic or Casteistic Society - every society subdues people's interests, in its own way. (like communism in Russia, or Casteism in Tamil Nadu/India).

I got much of my inspiration (or was it already there and ignited more?) by reading that single story.
I have always been wondering why there is a differential treatment for women in Tamil Nadu compared to men -- when it comes to widowhood, etc.
ours (and every other society) is Male chauvinistic - right?
Everybody in this forum well matured and knows the value of human and society but we discuss in this forum about great history.
History telling greats and falls. We are talking in this forum about greats in history achieved by a Tamil emperor Rajaraja Cholan.
He's great forever. He assumed title Rajarajan(King of Kings) once he conquered all the kingdoms surrounding him. This shows straight forwardness that he did and assumed title.
His history and Chola empire gives great sprit to Tamil for million years.
You first understand the Chola empire(Consisting of many kingdoms) spread across whole south asia from Maldives to Philiphines and ruled from Thanjavur 1000 years ago.
The whole forum knows very well about 2000 years of Tamil history. All know when and where kingdoms across Indian subcontinent conquered by Karikal Cholan, Rajaraja Cholan or Rajendra Cholan.
So talk specific of this forum and you start read Ponniyin Selvan. Then you don't talk ambulimama stories here.
