I am an ardent fan of Gokul and the first thing I read in varallaru is 'Rajakesari'. Everyone knows that its going at a good pace. Hats of to Gokul.
In the past couple of days, Gokul and I had a good discussion about a topic, which I thought will be of interest to the group also. After reading Rajakesari this month, I gave a comment to Gokul about a scene he described. Mazhapadiyar and Ambalavaanar goes to the Vanianchavadi, where they see a Palakara kadai near by. I laid my humble comment before Gokul that, in earlier days Food stuff was never sold in our land. Selling food was considered a sin and all along there were annachatiram and chavadis for resting and eating for the passer by. It was a family from Udipi who first started selling food (hotel concept) just a century or so ago. Thats why udipi hotels aer famous till date.It seems that family was cursed by all becuase selling food was considered a sin. Since the story was going very good, I felt such a scene differs from the real history.
Seeing this comment, Gokul was quite excited and wrote me back, based on which our discussion proceeded. Since there was nothing personal, I publish the mail chain between Gokul and myself, so that you all can get a first hand info on what our discussion was. I wrote my first mail as comment through the side(the crux of which is given above) and hence dont have that mail to publish here.
==========================Start of mail chain================= Hi Satish
You have the good habit of commenting on raajakesari after each month
Your point is well taken and infact it makes me think as well. But would it not be too idiallistic to think that food was never sold at all ? True that there was free food stuff available in most places (I have written about it in an earlier raajakesari episode - Jeyabheemathali vidudhi) but...is it right to say it was not sold at all ?
You have inspired me to look further into this. I will remember and will let you know if I come across any such references
