India heritage sites map with tags
  • Hi,
I recently started with geo-tagged maps, using Google maps utility. My aim is to
tag as many sites I can. This would be a long term activity as its a very large
area to be covered. There were some ideas about tagging heritage sites, which I
feel can be achieved with this. We need to see how everyone can contribute and
update this. One area where everyone can help is to suggest the webpages which
describes that site in details. Such links can be added to the tags so that if
anyone wants to get detailed information on that site, will get all useful links
    there itself.

Please review the map and give your suggestions. I have only added my MP trip
places as of now, I will be extending this now with Tamilnadu hetirage sites.

  • Hi Vj,
I know this site as this link is there in your site as well. Its a great
effort indeed, that to from a foreign national. However one thing which I miss
there is the proper explanation of the site/sculptures and history about the
place. If we can add these things as well with the tags then I feel that it will
be very helpful for an enthusiast. How doyou think about this?
  • hi saurabh

this was one of my points highlighted during the conference. Thankfully, the
followup mechanism has started post the event and the Government has asked
for a full followup note on the same. I will post updates on this shortly
  • Wow, VJ. There's Mr. Voirol's labor-of-love. So many already geo-tagged.
Not much left to do, is there. Wish we could have at least one Picasa
    album
for each site: all significant murthis. Pradakshina around ea temple.
    and make
it possible for others [like me] to add photos.
    Incredible amount of work.

  • Dear Vj

Please list some ideas on what are the steps to follow while taking a photo for this purpose.

Like what u mentioned in the tamil conference.
  • hi Sankar

We are no experts, but some basic thumb rules - when taking photos - try to
make a small sketch of the orientation and follow one direction covering
the sculptures - if there are many tiers finish one tier first and move on.

important sculptures - try to get multiple angles, showcasing its
uniqueness, beauty - for miniatures or massive ones - try to get some props
    for size comparison.

Lastly, talk to the temple people to know what is unique in the temple and
try to cover that. most often stahala puranams are depicted in stone, in
such cases try and get a copy of the written book or name board with the
    details to compare the sculpture.

regading GPS co ordinates, i am sure you can google and find out - tdy geo
tagging is very simple. Just ensure that you are as accurate as possible
    when places tags.

Howdy, Stranger!
