pallava : Shiva - Rudra - good article
  • Got that article:
I am giving the main points.
First the question of Rudra ( siva) a dravidian God and Vishnu a aryan God. Funny.
The dravidian god is called in a aryan name ( siva) and he is white ( another so called aryan feature) and Vishnu called perumal ( dravidian word) and he is black. ( dravidian feature). This theory of aryan/dravidina god  is as absurd as the race theory itself.
The Rudra's shanta rupa is well exolained in one of the 5 rigs ( sloka) of the Rigveda which is aclled pancha rudram ( The main Rudram is in Yajurveda) The first rig ( sloka) itself explains the mangala rupa of rudra.
In Hindu Philosophy bad is also an aspect of God. That too a god who has the responsibility of destructionwill have rigs praising that aspect . At the same time asone of the popular rigs ( sloka) of srirudram ( of yajur vedam) you hear in the temple duting harati...
namaste astu Bhagawan - Visweswaraya, mahadevaya, trayambakay, tripurantagaya, tripuragni kalaya, kalagni rudraya, neelakantaya, mrutynjayaya, sarveswaraya, sadasivaya, sriman mahadevaya ..
explains well all the aspects of siva, without any doubt.
People who come from a belief that god and satan are two different powers have misunderstood this as .. the bad was worshipped in the form of a ugra moorthi and after some time amalgamated into one form etc etc out of their ignorance.
It is the same rudra who has an destruction aspect and an anugraha aspect is worshipped in both names. The same pancha rudram ( of rig veda) and Srirudram ( of yajurveda) has rigs ( mantras) of both the aspects.
With regard to lingam - The shape dnotes the universe.
