Mylai Kapaleeswar
  • Dear Sir,
    Thanks for your attention.

Sastry writes in The Colas :
    Quote :

The Kalamukhas hold that the following are the means for attainment
of desires concerning this world and the next: 1. eating food in
skull;2.besmearing the body with the ashes of a dead body; 3.eating
    the ashes 4.holding a club 5.keeping a pot of wine 6.worshipping the
Mahavirathis. THE KALAMUKHAS WERE WIDESPREAD IN SOUTH INDIA in the
NINTH, TENTH & ELEVENTH CENTURIES ... At Melpadi, there was Mutt of
Kalamukahs - who was called Lakuleesa Panditha .. There was another
Thiruvottiyur who was called Caturananapanditha. (Unquote)

Sethuraman & Kudavoil have mentioned that in early ages, this was
practised in certain temples including Mylapore.

There is no inscriptional evidence in Mylpore Kapaleeswar temple to
support this theory. But the temple was not the one which existed in
those days. Hence the theory supported by other relevant
inscriptions were put forward by Dr.Sethuraman & Kudavoil.

Once again thanks for your interest,

    Regards, SB
  • The irukkuvelir community of kodumbalur were ardent followers of
kaalamukha since day one. They should have been instrumental in
bringing this influence upon cholas - who did not evince any special
interest in kaalamukha in early days.

The most famous among kodumbalur clan - Bhoothi vikrama kesari
supported a kaalamukha mutt in madurai - it was called mallukarjuna
madam - named after a saint who lived in that period. We have
inscriptions in moovar koil that talk about this.
