porto novo big street
  • freinds,
the potonovo(parangipettai) big street extending from vathiya pallivasal down south to rave main road is a an interesting heritage line. the road is about 3-4 km long and has all the uniqueness of the 17th century portonovo. the road has many ancient mosques and novian style muslim villas. the population is completely tamil muslims with unique physical appearence and customs.they are very freindly and speak a tamil with peculiar slang. the road is very calm and good for an leisurely walk. probably a preserved natural heritage line yet unspoiled by modern world.

the vellar joins the bay of bengal here. there is a small boat club and one can go upto the sea and visit the sand dunes at the sea entry. the mangaroves, sea and river joins here and gives a refreshing holiday experiance.(15 rupees per head/on a 10 people per motor boat)

there is a big flag post (may be 100feet high?)near the marine biology college campus which was erected to commemorate the british victory over HYDER ALI in 1780s.the road adjoinig this is called the flag post road.there is also a old port office of the europeans behind the present day custom office on the same road.

porto novo is a good day out for people from chennai, especially for one interested in the colonial trail.
