I am reading a book called Pandiyar seppedugal pathu published by World tamil research centre (Ulaga thamizh araichi niruvanam). It contains 4 sets of popular plates like Velvikkudi, Chinna mannur (big and small) as well as two new sets covering Dhalavai puram and Sivakasi copper plates.
The sivakasi plates are issued by Veera pandiya. Initially I thought it was our villan or anti hero :-) - but no, this is a later veera pandiya who gets killed by rajathi rajan. In rajathirajan's meikeerthi he claims that he killed this guy with the legs of an elephant. Rajathiraja - son of rajendra - was quite violent and cruel to some extent and he himself faced a violent death in the battlefield.
The book is interesting because it brings some light into the - not so certain history of pandiyas - between 600 to 1000 AD - almost during the period of cholas.
The book also analyzes the connection between Aye vel kings (about whom I wrote in Kanthaloor chalai) and pandiyas in the light of a set of copper plates issued by kok karunnanthan a venadu aye vel ruler. There was one very very interesting fact in the plates - about the "salai" he established based on the model of Kanthaloor. Based on this evidence, the kanthaloor salai might not have been a military academy but a place for brahmin education. Will post more details - but this calls for reexamination of certain facts related to "kanthaloor chalai kalamaruth tharuli". This ruler's period is that of....sundara / uttama chola !
