After other photos also uploaded, pls describe item wise - high points - so that those who missed the trip will be able to see them themselves whenever visit Mallai !
Looking at the photos, I guess I missed a golden opportunity of being with those blessed people on that day. Thanks so much, Venkatesh, for the excellent collection of photos.
:) The last few ones, especially "That's Me!!" and "Ravanan Meesai" were very educative. A special thanks for posting them!!!

Hi
natarajan srinivasan was there???
enna sir group pakkam thalaiye kattala? but you have been following it.
natarajan is a great short story writer. 'ulaga punkuzhali rasikar manra thalaivar' and a senior member of the group.
nadarajan should remember our last year trip to mallai and alhambra fort. but he could not enjoy it last time because we were ragging him about his grandpa's will.
Thanks a lot Venkatesh...very good photos... and seeing your mails, I never thought you are so young :)..
And I am going nuts seeing some of the photos...
I very well know, each panel, everytime we see, we can get some new insight. But there are lot of panels or places in mallai, which I have never seen. Like the miniature saluvankuppam, the citadel etc. You people are so lucky.
And it would be great, if the persons are identified in the group photo..I can only identify Chandra, Natarajan, VK, Shankaran and now VVenkatesh because of intro...
Looking at the miniature saluvankuppam, the lion pouncing on mahisha (these I have never seen)..the way the rocks were broken...I really wonder the greatness of our ancestors.
I think you people missed the 'pidari rathams'....a must see to understand how the monoliths were sculpted out, the quarry near by gives a lots of info about the way things were done 1400 years back.
We talk about Six Sigma, prototype development, following process etc. as if these are modern day concepts and we people invented all those. How foolish?
When we went to Kanchi Kailasanatha temple (it was the trip with Varalaaru team, when they released a special edition on Kailasanatha temple), I was quoting that, we talk about six sigma now, but 1400 years back, they have implemented six sigma in the temples. One defect in the entire temple will ruin it.
If its a assembled stone temple, we can atleast replace the block. What can be done in monoliths like Mallai? isnt it a six sigma project? isnt the project management of Kailasanatha temple or the mallai masterpieces the epitome of management? (and what should be said of the Egyptian pyramids built 4000 years back)
Look at the process they followed..they had a test bed for every major panel....should we call it prototype? they made a small proto, tested it out and only after that ventured to make the masterpiece. The mahishasura mardhini panel, though not a crude proto, a miniature was done before the major panel....likewise the saluvankuppam yali caves.. Pidari ratham (again a misnomer) reveals how the monoliths were constructed...top down approach... the bagiratha/arjuna panel, as Vijay posted we have an elaborate test bed...
How well organized our people were in those days? How and when we missed this perfection in history? Sad state, but good that atleast we, a small group can appreciate and enjoy these marvels.
> > Today we call it 'Alamparai'. when we visited there, the latest hit > was a song from 'Veyil'. Forgot the lines of the song.
romba software eluthina ippadi thaan aakum.
the song is uruguthE marukuthe
a melancholic song, a friend once told me , it brings out the deepest sorrow from the bottom of the heart.
i have posted 2 photos in alhambra folder. it has sathish, sivaram and nadarajan.

-sathish that was marakkanam temple. you discovered the 'SWASTHI SRI.. ' edict there. the temple had a lot of broken pillars. local people said it was due to the wars at alamparai. to aid your memory we visited thiruvidanthai( poor sivaram) salavan kuppam sangam temple, pallva quarry, marakkanam and alamparai. we missed sadurangapattnam- the dutch fort due to paucity of time.
an arabic name. this place along with sadras( kalpakkam) were sambuvarayar forts to protect shipping lines. must have been run by some arabs later and named so. venketesh
beautiful place.
