-Hi All, A couple of months back I read an article in Kumudam Bakthi regdng - "A Gowri Amman" of Vallam near Thanjavur and visited the place. It is at about 3 Kms north of Vallam Village, near Thanjavur - parallel to Medical College Road opposite to Vallam Bus Stand. The temple is isolated. Timings 7 am to 6 pm. This is a Kali. Kudavoil Balu (of Saraswathimahal) says this was worshipped by Karikal Chola before commencing construction of Kallanai. It is a Sudhai (Mortar) Diety. Mentions of this temple is found in the Sangam literatures. Probably one of the ancient. SB
Dear Mr SB nice to have you in the group I really enjoy everyone of your informative mails
I dont know the amount of truths in these but these are legends and myths in the Vallam area
There is this Kaliamman koil north of vallam in Alakudi road(May be the same one you re talking.where the local beleif is if you devote any cattle predominantly Buffalo and slaughter it at the temple( Bali) the same animals have been seen alive the next day its supposed to be a special shakthi of the amman.....(one of my uncles a Nasthigar confeses he has seen it and says what the villagers claim is true)
Thw other legendabout Vallam is a well called ''VajraTheertham''the local legend is that was created by a single arrow by Rama when Sitha was thirsty as they were wandering in the southern jungles.People claim nobody has reached the base of the well....Vajratheerthathin adi thottavar kidaiyathu...
