PS Audio Version & Overseas expeditions of South Indian Emperors
  • Dear Friends,

PS Audio version is an excellent attempt. Awaiting access ..

Shall check with Trichy based people on AIR progm and post ..

Shall try to contact AIR Trichy & Madurai through influential - like
minded persons for release of CDs .. or re-relaying at least .. &
    confirm..

Re Sridhar's Pandyas in Vietnam - Krupa has rightly pointed out that
the focus is turned to Pandyas & that a King gave away his assets to
    people .. Wonderful ..

Re Srihari's mail and his mails to come - we are indebted to him for
    ever ...

Please take efforts to preserve all his mails in the Files section ..
a tabulation of contemporary Kings will be an asset to any one
    looking deep into History..

Very glad to see the first mail on Audio version .. subsequent very
good responses .. and readiness of first 4 chapters in audio ..
    Congratulations ..

    Regards, sps
  • Hi All,

Very nice to hear that one of my dreams is coming true. We discussed
this during our mudhal yaathirai itself. But due to other schedules,
    didn't get materialised.

I am back from US last night and going to be in Chennai only. And i
have a digital voice recorder also. We can use it for recording and
ready to coordinate. The recorded audio can be transferred to
computer and edit using the audio editing softwares, finally we can
    burn it to CD.

Please let me know your opinions.
  • Hi all,
I could not upload even one chapter of recorded material onto yahoo egroups because the mp3 file was too big.I can FTP it to any one who can let me know his/her server details etc..Alternatively we can focus on recording first using your (Aditha Karikalan/Kamalakkannan,I am talking to u)recorder for which we have to divide the job and work in parallel, then think of the next steps.I am open to suggestions. Why not the chennites meet at some place for a brainstorming session?

  • Good to hear that four chapters are recorded already. I am eager to
listen. Can you please tell the size of the file. We may be able to
upload in parts. Also, tell us the duration of each chapter.

Not to shoot down your enthusiasm, I feel that bringing out the audio
version of huge novels like PS is very difficult (to organise, record
etc.) that too for a group like ours. Instead may I suggest, someone
in the group having some influence/access with AIR etc. can try to get
the audio versions and release it (in CDs)?
    "

We, the group, is not into 'releasing' CDs. However, we the
enthusiasts can attempt to record for our own benefits and share
among the interested people. If there is sufficient value
proposition, business people or the AIR will come forward to do that.
I guess it is high time that we start having audio books atleast for
    these great epics.

Remember: Homers Iliad is available in audio format and in a step
further a recent film, TROY, has been released.
(The book is also available online)

  • Hi all,
I have now 5 mp3 files covering the first seven chapters of part 1 of PS -all recorded using freecorder software in my voice using my laptop and a handheld microphone.Chennites belonging to the egroup- if a meeting can be arranged among them somewhere- are welcome to listen to them.At that time ways of improving the recording quality and accessing the files at remote locations via internet can be discussed.
I have a basic problem in according a completely Tamil origin to Rajaraja and other members of the Tanjore cola dynasty. The novel PS is more or less based on KA Neelakantha Sastri's history of the Colas which in turn depends on Kielhorn's dating of the accession of Parantaka I.This account does not attempt to resolve the problem of Sanskrit names such as Rajaraja,Arinjaya,Parantaka,Vijayalaya etc with earlier names such as Karikalan,Killivalavan,Nalankilli,Netunkilli,Ilancetcenni etc which occur in the sangam works.Clearly we are dealing with kings who came to the Tamil country from outside. The big temple also resembles the temples outside Tamilnadu rather than the other temples inside such as the Meenakshi temple,Srirangam temple etc. This question is raised purely as an academic one and is not meant to detract from the position of PS among Tamil historic novels.
    Any thoughts from any one?

  • Dear Krupa,
Thanks for that link on Nathamunigal.Incidentally that is not one on Srirangam temple.I have posted something on the evolution of Srirangam temple today and the link is http://vainavam.blogspot.com

  • Hi all,
I found I cant send even a very small mp3 file containing only one chapter to the egroup but I think it can go to individual yahoo accounts. If those interested can let me know at [email protected] I can try uploading the mp3 file into that person's account.

  • Rangarajan,

Can you burn it into an audio cd? So that we can play it when the
chennaites meet. (Looking forward this occassion).
