st.thomas and india....
  • freinds,
recently discovery channel came the documentory on st.thomas indian visit. it gave certain points which it beleived to be very strong

    1. trade and voyages between india and roman empire was very common in 1st century AD
2.after jesus was crucified his disciples under the command of st.peter decided to leave palestine and spread his gospel all over the world.
    3. india was very important then as it contained 1/3 of world population
    4. st.thomas could only have landed in kerala as evedenced by the recent pattanam port excavations near thiruvanchikulam.
    5. the christian community in kottayam has certain rituals which are unique to itself and had no connections with other christian misssions in the world.(although later they joined with syrian missions)
    6. there are certain folklore in kerala which calls st.thomas as "moothappan". there are even certain annual pilgrimage to a mountain in western ghats where he preached jesus sayings.
    7. there evidences in the kathakali ballads about a elder preist visiting kerala and subsequent migration to the east coast.
8.there are folk lores in kathakali saying he was killed by a vedan(murugan?)who hunts peacocks.
    9. the st.thomas mount is called parangi malai because parangi is a word derved from the tamil corruption of the portugese word "feringee" (means forigner).
10.portugese destryoed st.thomas shrine in calicut(as they ere opposed to eastern christian traditions) and built their own structure there. but a 2000 year old painting of a preist (?st.thomas)hidden beneath their construction which was revealed recently.
    11. it was marco polo in 13th century described the possible visit of st.thomas to chennai region. the portugese confirmed it in 16th century when the started their base near portonovo(pangeepettai!)200 km south of chennai region.
    12. there are mentions about one of jesus's disciples leaving to india. but it had not confirmed it. recently history channel programme on st.peter had mentioned about st.thomas departure.

    about jesus and india:

    13. jesus in his 12 years absence in palestine could only have wandered in the syria jordan are which had hindu traders and rishis.
14.jesus preachings had hindu connotations.he told his disciples in the last supper about mind-body dualism which is indian philosophy by and large.
    15. jesus need not have come to kashmeer but could have met kashmerie pundits in west asia. west asia had hinduism there in 1et century.

An interesting read on the "myth". It seems to be controversial.
