Shakespere and Hamilton Bridge
  • LOL. That reminds me of an anecdote I heard as a kid. There was this bridge called 'Hamilton Bridge'. Over the years the word 'Hamilton' was corrupted/evolved into "amilton"... "amibton".... "ambattan" by tamilians. So one fine day somebody decided to rename/anglicize the bridge. They renamed it as "Barber's Bridge".
  • Regarding 'Barbers Bridge' - long back Venkat shared a 1908 Map of chennai
(British India) in which the bridge is shown as 'Barbers bridge'.... :)
  • Yes we have had this discussion before, from Hamilton to Barber. I guess we have our share of mutilating british names like they did ours. My father has actually shown me Barber's bridge as a child (bridgena it is one of those super unclean white structures that is all, dont expect anything great). I dont know chennai well enough to remember where it was.
