Lingam worship
  • Dear Sir,

Lot was discussed about worship of Lingam & its origin.

Hence, I find it appropriate to attach this power point views on different forms of Linga worship.(Sorry it is bit large)

    Rgds.

  • Hi Mr Bala:

I am a member in PS for the love of writer Kalki and his writings besides having keen interest in the history of ancient India, particularly Tamilnadu  though I don't have any educational background  in archaeology, architecture or history as many members seem to have!  My area is banking and I work as a Manager in a nationalised bank in Chennai.

However, I find the discussion very interesting.  I wish to share a few things.

The 12 Jyotrilingam is good work and simply superb.  Well, I think I must also
contibute my "squirrel's share" with the group!   The attached pictures are on one of the oldest Shiva temples viz. Thiruppunnavasal, a remote rural village, in Avudayarkoil taluk, Aranthangi, Pudukkottai Dt, where I worked for 3 years. The temple is reported to be more than 1000 years old and belongs to the Sundara Pandian era of Pandya Dynasty.  There
is a village named S P Pattinam (Sundara Pandian Pattinam) nearby.

It is informed that the senior Shankaracharya - Shri Chandrasekara Saraswati whenever
visits this temple, he used to remove his chappals (paadha raktchai)  at the entrance
of the village as he had remarked once that the entire village has thousands of Lingams
beneath the soil and the land is very sacred and those who have poorva janma links
with this region alone are blessed to visit this place!

Thiruppunnavasal is located near the ECR on the way to Rameswaram.  This place
is in the Gulf of Mannar region and in half an hour you can reach Mannar, Sri Lanka,
    through a speed boat.

There are so many other temples in this region which claim to belong to the
Ramayana period like Paramandhur, Theeyathur, Ponbethi,  Mimisal, S P Pattinam,
    and Paasi Pattinam etc.

I am also a Shiva devotee and I have extensively travelled in Tamilnadu and
visited several Shiva temples.  Thank u for uploading 12 jyotirlingams.

Thank u again for the good work.  I will try to forward to others too.

we have discussed thirupunavasal on the banks of the sarpa nathi
    earlier too.
its huge lingam makes it the tallest among thevara shrines.

access was usually bad with pot holed roads from thiruvadanai.

we used to see this temple, thiruvadanai and kalayar koil in the same
    day.
hope the new road helps better viewing.
