In "Thillai & Nataraja", author B Natarajan (s/o SR Balasubramanian, Historian) quotes ::
1. "Some assert that the Patanjali of Yogasutra is different from the Patanajali of the Mahabashya - who is said to be contgemporary of Pushyamitra Sunga (of 2nd BC) .. and these or either is the same associated with Chidambaram "
2. Source Koyilpuranam @ Sthalapuranam :: " Re Hiranyavarman @ Simha Varman - SEMBIAN (?) - who is said to have come from Gauda (Bengal) having heard the fame of thillai & Vyakrapadhar crowned him as King of Puliyur & Patanajli resided with him. Patanajali is another form of Adhiseshan born to Athri Rishi & Anusuya, who dropped from her plams as soon as the Serpant was born and hence became to be known as Patanjali. However, Thiruvavaduthurai School takes view that Hiranyavarman was of 430 - 458 AD )
3. Kochenganan is mentioned in Thevaram hymns. Scholars like TV Mahalingam place him around 6th AD along with Simha Vishu Pallava.
4. PERUMPATRA PULIYUR THIRUMOOLATTANATHAR is the earliest Literary reference by Appar ( 6 :: 51 - 6) to the ancient Lingam
5. CV Narayana Ayyar adds :
Re Cochenganan - VARUVAYMAI M-A-R-A-Y-V-A-R-K-K-U maaligaigal pala samaithan (he who constructed several Maaligais for Marayaiyors - and it is possible that he would have provided residential accommodation to Thillai Moovayiravar who in turn Crowned this King.
6. RE :: NATARAJA CULT ::
i) PR Sreenivasan Quoting Roop Lekha :: Probably Parakntaka I ( 907 - 955 AD) creted very first sample of Ananda Thandava form of Nataraja in stone.
ii) Thirumoolar Thirumandhiram Verses 2722 - 2803 commencing from Thirukutru Darsanam an ecstasic potrayal of the dance of Nataraja in Ponnambalam is realised. 2722 pointed reference to Chidambaram. Thirumoolar is considered of 5th / 6th Century.
iii) Thiruvalgnadu CP states that Parantaka constructed a Golden house for " Purari " Siva @ Nataraja.
iv) In Pallava Siyamangalam cave, there is a Bujangatrasa form of Siva.
7. Author Natarajan opines that between the 3rd and 6th Centuries, temple with Brick structure and Timber made Chitambalam would have existed which was changed to Katrali (Stone Structure) by Cocenganan and Parantka I would have GOLD GILTED the Wooden Ambalam as Ponnambalam.
In fact, the earliest stone approximation to the Nataraja bronze is found in a seventh century Pallava cave temple at Siyamangalam (Plate 1) (ibid.: 193). Here, a four-armed Shiva dances in bhujangatrasita karana with right leg extended, front right hand in the protective gesture and rear right hand holding a lamp with fire; however, the front left hand is not crossed and the demon is missing. Executed on a pilaster, it suggests a creative portrayal inspired by a dancer rather than a worshipped icon.
2) Pallava Rock Architecture and Sculpture/text by Elisabeth Beck.
dances the ananda tandava. It is probably the earliest known representation of Siva dancing the ananda tandava.
Thillai was first mentioned in 'KSHETRA THIRUVENBA' written by AiyadigaL kaadavarkon who was related to Simhavarma Pallava. History place the period around 550 CE.
Life runs down ; dear ones desert;
Old age closes in; the much loved
Body-wagon’s axle breaks and is cast away
In the open. O! goodly heart ,leave for Tillai Spatium ,well before.
