    (V. 45.) He, the light of the Solar race, took possession of (the
town)[36] Tanchapuri (i.e., Tanjore) which was picturesque to the
sight, was as beautiful as Alaka (the chief town of Kubera), had
reached the sky (by its high turrets) and the white-wash of (whose)
mansions (appeared like) the scented cosmetic (applied to the body),
just as he would seize (by the hand) his own wife who has beautiful
eyes, graceful curls, a cloth covering (her body), and sandal paste as
(white as) lime, in order to sport with her.

    (V. 46.) Having next consecrated (there) (the image of)
Nisumbhasudani[37] whose lotus-feet are worshipped by gods and demons,
(he) by the grace of that (goddess) bore just (as easily) as a garland
(the weight of) the (whole) earth resplendent with (her) garment of
    the four oceans.
  • What about Madurai? anybody ruled from there atleast some part of the
    pandiya nadu?

Also note the capitals like uriayur, thanjai, pazhaiyarai, thillai, are
located on the main or sub river of kaviri! except GKC & Puhar??
Is the puhar is same what we have now or the submerged kaviripoompattinam?
  • Dear Shriram et al,
    About Uraiyur [Wuraiyur],
Has anyone been to a temple there called
    ThiruTantoreshvarar Kovil ?

I've been to Tiruchi twice looking for it, no luck.
    Has great early Chozha sculpture.

[see AIIS website for some of its Kudus & Dvarapalakas]

will write more on this within 2 / 3 days.

    regards / sps
  • Dear SPS,
Thanks for the correct spelling. I have such
trouble with spelling, transliteration of Indian languages
into English. Often I have a list of several temples
that all turn out to be the same one !

Thanks in advance for anything you can tell
me about this beautiful Uraiyur temple I couldn't find.

  • HI Kathie

trichy does have some very old shiva temples. the rock fort itself is
    considered a part of kailash..

temples which have devaram about them in proper trichy are

    thayumanavar(half way up the hill)
    panchavarneshwarar( uraiyur)
uyyakondan * a beautiful hillock with a fabulous temple.
    thiruvanaika on srirangam island
    thiruverumbur
temples whic are close by are

    nedungalam
thiru patrurai( on a narrow point with cauvery and kolldam on either
    side
thiru painkili( with walls striped like a tiger)
    pachilasramam

is the temple you mention also called by another name?

    venketesh
  • Dear Kathie,

THIRUKANDIYUR is much discussed in our Group.

Siva temple puranam says : Brahma did not utter the meaning of OHM
and hence out of 5 heads, one was chopped off by Siva .. an act of
Bravery by Siva - Veera attanam ( out of 8 such temples) !

Just opposite there is a Vishnu temple : Puranam says : the Skull of
Brfahma got stuck to Siva who performend penance here and the skull
    got detached. !

To cite it is cutomery to link the details ...

Like wise there is Thanthondri malai... Hillock .. wherein a Vishnu
(Venkatachalapthy) temple exists.. This is between Karur - Trichy.

The THANTHONDREESWARAR .. Siva story goes like this.. related to
    THAYUMANVAR episode..

Thayumanavar Sannidhi is located in Golden Rock, Trichy. In this
Lelithangurapallvagraham by Mahendra I is caved (this is also much
discussed in our Group) .. after he changed faith as GUNABARA from
Jainism to Saivism at Thiruvadhigai (near Pandrutti) !

Here he calls Lord Siva as Gunabara !

nearby is Thayumanvar.. THAY... MOTHER.. Lord Siva has served as
MOTHER too. ( Thayum .. Mothher too !).

A pregnant lady - in advanced stage, unable cross river Cauvery, was
helped by an ELDERLY WOMAN ( Maruthuvachi ... Marundhu is Medicine..
Uneducated but experienced Maruthuvachi - WOMEN - with knowledge of
Medicine Science or Signs / symptoms !) - together crossed Cauvery
and gave birth to child and later on disappeared and the WOMAN
    believed to be Lord Siva..

This episode of delivery of child is supposed to have taken place
near Uraiyur - and the Lord Siva who APPEARED there instantly is
    named as THANTHONDREESWARAR ..

THERE is a separate Siva temple near Panchavarneswarar temple in
Uraiyur !~ Does not seem to be have been hymned in Thevaram ... !

Uraiyur Naachiyar temple is also having interesting epsidoes...

Nammazhawar is said to have represented Nachiar to Ranganathar's
RANGANAYAKI in Stirangam - which forms basis for ARAYAR SEVAI..
which is conducted all these Centuries !

    regards/ sps
