I am sad to announce the the Chola period paintings found in fragments at the Siva temple at Tirupulivanam, near Uttaramerur was comprehensively erased in the name of repairs. Some of the figures were extremely beautiful. In all probability, they must have been painted during or just after Rajaraja's rule.
These photographed by me and my friend a year ago and the place was visited by PS team, many of whom were very happy to see the paintings, which was just the another example of Chola period othern than the one at Brihadisvara at Tanjavur..
Today, bare walls shed tears at the stupidity of the donors. Having closely involved with Chola paintings, I join the walls.
So depressing to hear something like this. Lack of awareness of our heritage and hence lack of pride in our culture and commitment to the work. What else can one say.
The same story goes on elsewhere where ever HR & CEgives the temple renovation contract to ruthless contractors. The story is about to happen in Kalakkad and MAnnar Kovil. Seing this, I am forced to finish the blog I am preparing to show cuase such works, the photos I havetaken in both places. I will post it tomorrow w/o fail and am planning to send them to news papers and magazines, thru REACH Chandra
This is really sad. i still very well remember that trip. Sriraman sir gave me a small lesson on to how to view old paintings and the technique on preserving them. It is such a shame we are losing such a rich art due to ignorance.
Below is the link to one of the picture clicked by Sriraman sir.
