who was kalki's favourite charecter?? did he show a bias towards anybody?? did he base anybody on himself or his personal dream of what he wanted to be?
Never looked in that view that what would be Kalki's favorite. Very interesting initiation by Venkatesh. I guess his favorite is Mandakini. Because, whenever he speaks of her, he says only nice things and with respect. And also he links the incident that gives the title PS to her. Looking forward for more guesses...
My own vote goes for two people: Vandhiyathevan and Arulmozhi Varman.
VD - because he signifies Kalki's own spirit; love for traveling and an abiding respect for the chola empire. At the same time, VD was a carefree young man, personable, aware of his charm and with a certain don't care attitude that I think Kalki himself envied (he himself was a little like that, if you compare his writings). VD was Kalki himself in a brand new young avataar - looks and charm and courageous spirit and talent of getting out of a difficult situation. And then he marries the spirit of the Chola nadu itself - Kundavai.
Arulmozhi: I think Kalki's respect for him transcended anything. I don't think Kalki could envision himself as a ruler - he saw himself more as an official biographer with the enormous good luck of watching him from some one else's pov (VD, in this case). But Arulmozhi's vision and thirst for more impressed him.
My vote is for Vadiyathevan. I read somewhere that Kalki wanted to use Vandiyathevan for indroducing teh characters and then sideline him. But he started to develop an admiration for his character and carved it beautifully to make him the HERO of the great novel and sidelinig the title name bearing Arulmozhi Varman!
I think Vandiyathevan is the real, de facto hero of PS. I remember Kalki uses a phrase' nam kadaiyin nayakan' somewhere to refer ot VD. may be, I have to read the novel again to locate the reference. Sampath
Dear Sampath You are absolutely right VD was the Kathanayagan and Kalki uses that phrase a few times As for as his favorite I thought it was Sivakami?? Sri
Seetharaman proudly recalled and narrated me later that Dr. Kalaikkovan was keeping his head on SR's laps ( Madimeedhu thalaivaithirundhar !) and some participants were singing. !
As you (WE) are aware, Ramchi @ Ramachandran - who founded our Group - who brought a book on GNB through Ananda Vikadan in previous Book Fair - is ardent music lover .. Recall his visit to Thiruvaiyaru from Nandhipuram too. ! They seem to have sung.
Even this Mallai trip (though I had to miss due to an urgent outstation trip) evoked very PLEASANT memories .. when we - Dr. Kalikkovan - Dr. Nalini - varalaaru team - yourself, me and others - were sitting near the Shore Temple just a day before we launched PSVP in Mylapore Sangeetha !
We heard the distant sound of waves ( Alaiosai !) and started talking several things.. on Kalki's crativity blended with History !
kalki wrote the magnum opus over a long period. i am of the view he had favourites then and there. if we call one as his favourite why do they vanish from the story for so many episodes. lets remember this was a weekly serial. pungkuzhali did not come for the whole first year. we need to search for clues in kalki's life and the ps story line for all his favourites. even a mother has a favourite son though all her children came from her blood. i think towards the end of the story manimekalai was his favourite. he finishes the novel with her death. and just before kalki's death- a few hours before he asked his daughter anandhi to sing the song pungkuzhali sings. if he wanted to hear one of his own creations so late in his living hours pungkuzhali must have been his favourite in book 2. of course vanthiyathevan was his favourite in book 1. of course kalki was so benevolent to the villians too, recognizing we end up pitying naganandhi and periya paluvettaraiyar. venketesh
Ennna Venkat neenga, was waiting eagerly that you had a name, eppadi generic-a solli vittuteengale :) Anyways it makes total sense though, that he liked different characters based on time and degrees of interest. Punguzhali and Vadhiyadevan are among the most well developed characters in his work, it is not surprising he liked them. Among royal characters he developed Narasimha Pallava a lot better than RRC. His RRC is somewhat of a flat predictable guy who can do no wrong, of course if our mental image is that of the real great RRC then it is a different story.Any good novelist develops negative characters like anyone else, meaning as human beings with positive and negative traits but play out their negative traits more. That is the way it is in real life. Valmiki developed his Ravana and Vyasa his Duryodhana in exactly same ways. PPazhuvettaraiyar is a great warrior, actually you do feel sorry for him when he overhears Nandhini and learns of her real intentions. Naganandhi, am not sure if one feels sorry for him exactly but he is an odd guy, definitely a misfit as a monk and stuck with an overtly dominating brother.
Any idea of Kalki's preferences among social novels? Thank you.
> Punguzhali and Vadhiyadevan are among the most well developed > characters in his work, it is not surprising he liked them.
yes . pungkuzhali is not a charecter of a pen and ink. she is wholesome. even mouths kalki's poetry.kalkis symbol of socialism. a boat woman on karikalan's throne.... vanthiyathevan was perhaps a charecter kalki wanted to be. grgarious, lively , daring, getting out of odd situations. some of kalki himself in vd too. if you read his biography first and then PS you will realise so many similar situations. vanthiyathevan and manimekalai are almost engaged courtesy maran but then its broken off. kalkis first engagement too was broken off under the pretext that he had gone to jail once.
His RRC is somewhat of a flat predictable guy who can do no > wrong, of course if our mental image is that of the real great RRC > then it is a different story.
whereas i think ps was kalki himself. ( kalki was called ponnu iyers magan, in his vilage. perhaps this contributed to the naming of his novel. a tribute to his father's nick name) ps ws so pacific. the only time he takes up the sword is to fight vanthiyathvan whom he very well knows brought a message for him. the saving the bird nest arriving on an elephant is definitely a manifestation of his nature. kalki went out of the way to emphasise his good guy image. like wanting to be arrested by the pazhuvettaraiyars inspite of everybody advising him not to do.( kalki did the same thing in the sthyagraha movemebnt.)
I know yours - from reading KM, Ravidasan steals the show and towers among all the others with his steadfast patriotism ( albeit to the pandya cause)
Rakkammal too - so why dont you share with us your experiences while writing KM and how you developed the characters further ( Alwarkadian put on weight in the 5 years !!)
If you look at all > the historical novels of tamil(mostly, i mean), you can see one common > thing, the central character of the book would never be the hero of > the book. A commander, or a spy only would be the hero and he would be > introduced first in the book. Eg (Yavana Rani, Kadal Pura, almost all > the books by Sandilyan).
its easy that way. we have a historical charecter with established reputations. we just cant digest him running around trees with heroines in tow.
It is not uncommon to have "titular hero" and "defacto hero"; "nominal" and "real".
I must remember not to use chrome (google's browser) to post messages. More than once, the message got lost in the cyberspace. I have reported this bug to google.
But the browser is good and fast. I am sure it will display better for indic languages, as compared to firefox. The present market share of 60% for Internet explorer, 30% for firefox and the balance for opera and other browsers. Chrome is in the 4th place, after IE, firefox, and Opera. Chrome will take the 3rd place soon, in a matter of days.
Another important point; chrome retains the browsing pattern, history, search commands etc. for about 9 months to help the person. For some this is a blessing, for some a security risk.

My vote for Kalki's favorite character goes to VD too. Throughout the novel, I felt that VD is Kalki himself narrating the story of RRC as he goes through the adventures.
